Rejected, dejected

My daughter just received her rejection letter for the MT program. JMU was one of her top choices, so it's a tough day here. Just wondering if anyone knows the stats on how many auditioned this year and how many will be accepted? Is in-state/out-of-state status considered at all?

Oh, and just a warning: the "rejection" letter began with the words "Congratulations on your acceptance .... " and a huge whoop went up, until the rest of the sentence read "to JMU" (to which she was accepted 2 months ago). The next line read, "In a highly competitive year, we are not able to offer you a spot in the musical theater concentration." Huge bummer. Good luck to everyone else though.

Ugh, I am sorry to hear about that. Sending positive thoughts your way for some good news from other schools!

My daughter auditioned mid-January and has not heard anything. Are the letters going out soon/now?

Letters will be sent to Early Action students who were admitted to JMU over the next few weeks.

Letters will be sent to Regular Decision applicants in late March/ early April after JMU has made Regular Decision admissions decisions.

I was wondering why Early Decision kids were finding out sooner? When a boy asked in our session if we'd get a decision earlier than everyone else, we were told that we'd have to wait until the Regular Decision letters came out, so we'd all find out at the same time. I wasn't expecting anything until at least the end of March! Lol.

In order to be offered a place in the MT Concentration a student also has to be accepted to JMU academically. After the auditions in January we meet to discuss all of the auditionees and come up with the MT class that we would like to make offers to. Since the EA academic admits already know that they have been accepted to JMU, we can let them know their status in terms of MT now. We will not know who of the RD auditionees has been admitted to JMU until end of March/ beginning of April when the admissions office notifies us of their decisions. So, we have to wait until then to send letters to RD applicants. All students who audition for the MT Concentration who are admitted to JMU academically will also receive a letter from the program notifying them of their status in terms of admission to the MT Concentration. Students who are not admitted to JMU academically will not receive a separate letter from the program.

Thanks for clarifying : ). I did get the letter EA, it was just weird because the man at the info session was fairly adamant that EA kids would still get their letters with RD kids.

My D got an acceptance email today, but I assume that is for the school not the MT program, but I thought they said that the two would come together....

Hi. Congratulations on your D's acceptance to JMU --

The acceptance to the Musical Concentration come after the school acceptance. The admissions office asks us to wait until Thursday so there is time for the academic admissions notifications to get to all students before we send our admissions letters. All students admitted to JMU who auditioned for the Musical Theatre concentration should hear from the School of Theatre & Dance by the beginning of next week.

KatMT, is the new performing arts complex still on track for completion in Spring of 2010? Do you have merit scholarships for MT kids who are also very qualified academically?

The building is indeed on track to be in full use by fall of 2010. April of 2010 is the scheduled completion date with us moving into the facility over the summer. In terms of scholarships for MT... The school of theatre and dance does not have scholarships for incoming students. All departmental scholarships are for students continuing in the program. In the spring students are given the opportunity to apply for scholarships that would be for the following academic year. Each scholarship has different eligibility criteria. This information can be found on the school of theatre and dance website. JMU as a whole does have academic & service based scholarships for incoming freshmen. Some of these require a student to apply to JMU early action (which is non-binding). Information on these scholarships can be found on the freshman admissions website.
