DIII rowing at JHU

JHU is considered a Division 3 school for rowing. If I am interested in getting recruited for crew, how much strength will the sport have in the admissions process.

If the coach has me in one of his top spots, will this help me as much as being a top spot at a Division I program?

Probably not.

To answer your second question first...
Being recruited for a DIII sport is A LOT different than being recruited for a DI sport -- not just at Hopkins. DI coaches have much more pull, and scholarships are involved as well.

As far as your first question, tt never hurts to get in touch with a coach if you are possibly interested in playing a DIII sport at Hopkins. Just send them an email with questions about the team and also an introduction of yourself and your abilities. Coach contact info can be found here: http://hopkinssports.cstv.com/school...hop-staff.html

Admissions works closely with all the coaches and a supported recruit will be factored in the Admissions review process. Being a recruit will matter, but how much of a factor depends on where you rank on a coach's list and also how strong of a candidate you are for admissions.

I'm sure this isn't an official policy or anything, but from my experience it seems that sport itself matters also. I think the majors sports (football, basketball, soccer, etc) seem to carry more weight than something like crew or fencing.

Would you agree with this AdmissionsDaniel? I'd like to hear your opinion since my anecdotal evidence doesn't really confirm anything.

The Admissions Office meets with coaches for all our DIII sports and definitely takes into account the ranking of recruits for each sport. Some teams have a lot of needs and others don't. Some coaches do a lot of recruiting and others don't. The goal is to field competitive teams for each sport while also maintaining the academic standards of the University.

In my experience, there are certain DIII sports that are given more attention because of their status as a major sport or a successful team. For JHU that would include soccer, swimming, football, basketball, and baseball. In no way is that to say that other sports like wrestling or fencing or crew or track, etc. are ignored or their recruits do not matter. Each year it will change.

I'm actually on the crew team and although I can't answer any of your questions regarding admissions, here is the head coach's email address. We've had a number of recruits come and hang out over the past semester so you should see if thats a possibility.

Also, you should contact our captain Lukasz. He's a nice guy.
