Yes that is the essay I refer to for the Universal Application. I have actually not seen a copy of the Universal App. so I wasn't sure how they would be doing their essay -- like the Common App. where you have choices, or just one main personal statement. I guess they went the route of the one main personal statement.

Yes you can use multiple mediums. |

| If I apply through commonapp.org I'll have to send the Common App essay to all schools on my list, right?
So what should I do if I want JHU to consider the communities essay? Just submit everything and ask you to ignore the Common App essay, which was written for the other schools? |

| They explicitely state Common App OR JHU Essay #1... So i don't think it would be smart...
But I'm still wondering if there is actually a possibility not to send the Common App essay if one is applying through commonapp.org... |

| For applicants applying to Johns Hopkins using the Common Application, you have the choice of submitting one of the Common Application essays OR the JHU "Communities" Essay which is essay topic #1 of the JHU Supplement.
Applicants may send in both their Common Application essay as well as the JHU "Communities" Essay. In such cases, the Admissions Committee will focus the review on the JHU essay, and consider the common app. essay as supplemental information. This is a choice each applicant can make on their own ... we have no preference ... and it won't impact your app. review positively or negatively.
As for when you apply online through the Common Application, I am not actually sure who the system works re: essays. I am not sure if when you submit your application it is the same for each school, or if you can make changes like submitting your essay to one school but not the other. I think you can do that, but since I have never completed an online Common App. I am not 100% sure. You should review the instructions on the Common App. web site, and/or contact them directly. |

Once you have submitted your Common App to any institution, your application will be locked and you will not be able to make any changes to it.
| (From commonapp.org FAQ)
Looks like we'll have to submit the Common App essay anyway. I'm definitely going to write the communities essay and ask you to consider the Common App essay as supplemental information.
Thanks for your help. |

| I have already submitted my application with the required 2 essays, but I wanted to send in a half page essay, explaining an extra curricular that has been very important to me...
So should I send it? |

| is a pictorial representation okay for "any medium"? also, if that were the case, would it be ok to submit that in the mail and submit the common app online (with the common app and supplemental essay)? |

| Any medium means ANY MEDIUM. It is your choice how your interpret that condition of the essay prompt.
If you choose to apply online but your essay is presented in another medium, then yes you need to mail your essay in to the Office of Admission. In doing such, please note in your online application that your essay is being forwarded in the mail & make sure your essay includes your full name, birth date, and school. |

| So AdmissionDaniel, correct me if you are wrong, but if I am applying RD, would I be better off keeping my CommonApp essay or doing the JHU #1 and #2? (I've already done #2) |

| You are required to do #2 ... it is your choice if you want to do #1 or a Common Application essay. YOUR CHOICE. |

| aside from whether or not the communities essay is preferred or not, you should do it. it actually was a lot of fun for me, and i hear the same from other applicants. i actually wrote two because i couldn't decide, but obviously only submitted one.
best of luck to you, whichever you choose. |
