  • ACT: 34
  • GPA: 3.84 ish
  • Rank: around 15% or a bit below
  • Other Tests: 4 on both APUSH and AP Eng Lang
Subjective
  • Essays: Not especially good, but not horrible
  • Teacher Recs: Not sure what to compare them to (read one, and it was good, but don't know how good); neither was bad though.
  • Counselor Rec: at least okay; my counselor knew enough about me to write more than a generic letter, and I know it was a positive rec, but I don't know how it would compare to others
  • Supplementary Material: none
  • Hook: none
Personal
  • Location: small town outside of Ann Arbor, MI
  • High School Type: public with about 1200 or so students
  • Ethnicity: Caucasian

  • Applied for Financial Aid: Yes
b]Other[/b]
  • Extracurriculars: Violin, Destination Imagination, Quiz Bowl, World Cultures Club, co/assistant managed a 5th grade DI group this year
  • Awards: Nothing extraordinary
  • Advice? Commiserations? Feel like bragging?: Disappointed that I didn't get in, but at least I didn't get rejected; I'm going to try to send in new material, etc. Hopefully a supplemental/new essay (my Chicago one that I wrote after I sent in the common app) if that's allowed, plus a statement of continued interest, etc. Hopefully this means I still have a chance at some of my other reach schools.

Rejected

Stats:
  • SAT: 2170
  • SAT II: 800, 740, 710
  • GPA: 3.4 UW
  • Rank: top 20%, pretty low rank for my school
  • Other Tests: (AMC, AP, IB)
5s on AP Comp Sci and World History
Subjective
  • Essays: Allright, sort of risky so I might have turned them off
  • Teacher Recs: Okay, both from math teachers though
  • Counselor Rec: Probably good

  • High School Type: Totally non-competitive public. Sends people to Hopkins regularly though...
  • Ethnicity: White
  • Gender: Male
  • Applied for Financial Aid: Yes
Other
  • Extracurriculars: Bland
  • Awards: None
  • Advice? Commiserations? Feel like bragging?: Well, I have to say that holistic admissions can be frustrating. After applying it's not like one can say "Well, this is what I did wrong, and I need to work on XYZ. But nonetheless, I never won any major awards, nor did I start applying myself academically until mid-way through my junior year - and my class rank reflects that.

Nonetheless, I have to say that I'm pretty disappointed to get rejected by all of "target/reach" schools, since I felt like I had some redeeming qualities from the get-go that would get me in to some competitive school.

When I get down about it, I just try to remember that there are students out there who have been working their entire lives in academics to get to this point - and find an accepted letter. I've only been really taking the hardest classes possible my Junior and Senior years, so I have no one to blame but myself

Good luck to everyone who's going to Johns Hopkins next year.

my bad, does it just mean you're waitlisted for all applicants to JHU?? im pretty sure that people who psted stats would have gotten in if what program they applied to was irrelevant to thier admissions decision...but i could be wrong.

you can find median SATs on collegeboard.com when you send scores to JHU.
