Covered Grades Question

I have heard that JHU may discontinue its Covered Grade policy for freshmen next year. Is this true and when will incoming JHU students know for sure whether it is being discontinued or not?

Also, any classes that are covered or taken S/U cannot be used to fulfill major or minor requirements correct?

So basically are we taking general ed classes? like writing seminars etc.

I would suppose they'd tell you. Although since they haven't announced anything yet, I'd assume covered grades will still exist next year. S/U classes can not be used for a major after first semester. That is, you can use the first semester S/U classes towards majors, however if you opt to take any other course S/U during your four years at Hopkins (for a possible total of 7, not including first semester), they may not count towards a major or minor.

Also, people major in writing sems too, it's not "general ed". You might offend someone. (they're touchy people)

If by "general ed" courses, you mean core classes that some schools require you to take, then Hopkins does not have "general ed" or core classes. Students take classes to complete their major, and then what we call "distribution credits." And coolguy is right, writing sems is not a general ed class, it's a major here, and the department is very reputable.
