Ok so I just took a tour of hopkins this weekend, prior to this visit I was really excited and thought that hopkins would be a perfect fit for me. However when I got their and met all of the students and other vistors they were all very stiff, cut throat, and didn't seem like very much fun. Also not that I am racist but everyone else in our information session was either asian or foreign. My real question is, are the lacrosse players the only somewhat normal want to have fun type of college students or was it only because I was visting in the summer when only the serious students are their? This question is mainly for current students and alum.

i wouldnt base your judgment on hopkins on a summer visit
im not staying there this summer, but i have visited a couple of times and it is really dead
like you said, some people who are staying are really intense and looking to get ahead on their majors others are there because they did poorly in a class and need to retake it
no one wants to take classes in the summer, so if they are, they prob wont be happy
hopkins has its share of antisocial people, but there are a fair share that want to have fun
if you can visit sometime next semester, i would imagine that you would have a different experience

come visit during the school year, and I'd hardly call the lacrosse players "normal"

I agree with the two responses that a visit during the summer is much different than a visit during the school year. In fact, many of the students on-campus over the summer are not actually JHU students -- we host many high school academic enrichment programs too.

I am curious though ... you say you visited this past weekend. That was the 4th of July holiday weekend and the Admissions Office was closed on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. What kind of official visit did you attend over the weekend? I just ask because you were visiting the campus during a time with out official visits, few other visitors, and a time when even many of our summer students are not on campus because of the holiday. During official visits over the summer, visitors have contact with our summer student tour guides and I know all of them and they do not fit your description at all.

I was just in Baltimore late June, and what I found most depressing was the surrounding area of JHU. There seemed to a lot of bad, run-down neighborhoods only a few blocks away. I was also at Inner Harbor, but it seemed like the run-down areas were the norm for Baltimore city.
