What is the reputation of Kent State? I don't mean the massacre thing, or does that even help a school's reputation. Do student's like going there? I checked US News & World Report and I wasn't sure of the ranking: National Universities, fourth tier.

Some people give it the reputation of "Kant read, Kant write, Kent State." as a party school for people who couldn't get into anywhere else. It's reputation is well above that as many successful people went there. Another reputation is basically what I used it for, was as a semi-selective college that would be far enough away to Cleveland where I could live down there, but close enough to where I could come back basically at any time. Outside of Ohio its reputation (without the shootings) is basically on par with a Southern Illinois, IUPUI, UMBC or something on that level. A decent school who occassionally gets a freakishly good sports moment. (check the Elite Eight run of the 2002 BB team.) I think the fourth tier rep is undeserved, but KSU is probably a good program or two away from being on the same tier as Bowling Green and Ohio U. There is an unspoken mystique about the school that the tradegy of May 4, 1970 makes a lot of students go there. Makes you feel like you were a part of history and the counterculture of the Vietnam era.

i agree with joev..im goin to berkeley, but i greatly admire the courageous students who "spoke truth to power" on May 4, 1970. that incident created a reputation for Kent state as a politically active campus and that helps attract higher-quality applicants.
