I just got my acceptance letter to Kenyon, which is my number one school by far. I got the $7,000 dollar scholarship, and while I know this is in and of itself very rare and I'm proud to be a recipient, the unfortunate truth is that this is simply still not enough money for me to afford to go- half of that will simply to go airfare to get there and back every year! So, my question- is there any chance that I can talk to an admissions counselor/finaid person and express my sincere desire to come to Kenyon, but explain that I've (a) been given a $25,000 offer at Brandeis University and (b) cannot come to Kenyon without a larger award...is there any chance whatsover that they would offer more money, or should I just accept the fact that (*sniff *sniff!) I won't be coming to Gambier this fall?

I think you should definitely call them. As "woohoo" points out, if you cannot attend without a larger award then you have nothing to lose.

I write to recommend that you call the dean of admissions directly. In your acceptance letter, she invites accepted students to call her, and I think you should take her up on it. (I recall seeing this invitation in my son's acceptance letter.)

Also, my experience with the young admissions counselors at Kenyon has been mixed, at best. My sense is that they sometimes treat inquiries like it is their job to simply get rid of the caller, rather than really resolve the question. And, in your case, you need to speak to someone who is willing, and who has the authority, to evalute your situation and hopefully take some action.
