Does anyone have any information to share about the strength of the music program at Kenyon? I would particularly like to read about the orchestra and ensemble groups (instrumental music), and the ability to participate as a non-music major.

treeman, I think Kenyon definately does have great music programs---that's partially why I applied, because I want to continue my music (not music major that is). Check the Kenyon website and there is a whole page with links about the various musical ensembles, etc, that are on campus. Their musical facilities are pretty good too, if I remember correctly.

I am a sophomore music major and I can tell you that Kenyon definitely has many opportunities for non-music majors. While the strength of the music program is definitely in the choral/vocal tradition, there are many groups for instrumentalists as well. I play in the Wind Ensemble and of the 50 or so people only about 5 or so are actual music majors and even then most are double majors. The same thing applies to the Knox County Symphony which is also has a number of faculty and community members. There are also smaller groups such as Chamber Winds, Early Music, Sundanese Gamelan, String Quartet...etc. As long as you can find about 5 people or so any type of group is possible. The facilities are amazing also. Many students also continue their lessons as well. The new part of the music building was built in 1999 and has many rehearsal rooms; I have never had trouble getting a practice room. I cannot say enough good things about the music dept. When I came to Kenyon I wasn't even going to be a music major but I befriended a faculty member who encouraged me to pursue music. rdt425 -- Thank you for the thoughtful reply. My D and I drove out to Kenyon in January. Although classes weren't in session, we were very impressed. The campus was beautiful (even in winter), the people we met were very friendly and helpful, the pumpkin soup at the corner coffee shop was tremendous, the athletic facility is one of the best I've seen, and yes, we were particularly impressed by both the new science buildings (my D is contemplating a major in either math or physics) and the music facility. All in all, a pretty winning combination. She is going to have a tough choice to make. The music program may tip the balance. I'm also planning on talking with financial aid to see if there is any room to reevaluate their offer. Again, I really appreciate the time that posters like you take to help those who are making very important decisions.

As an update my daughter has decided to attend Carleton. I very much appreciate the information provided by those posting on the Kenyon thread. Be assured that my D was very impressed with Kenyon, and her decision was not an easy one to make.
