Creative writing at Kenyon

Just returned from a great visit to Kenyon. D is interested in creative writing and we learned that each of the creative writing classes requires submission of samples prior to getting into the class.

Can anyone comment on how hard it is to get these classes? D is a serious writer and I don't anticipate a problem, but other schools don't have this requirement and it's making her a little nervous.

The poetry workshops are pretty wretched. No, they are not hard to get into.

Kenyon's well-known for its writing program--the Kenyon Review is way up there among the small literary presses (most of the prestigious ones have small-circulation). I'm not sure how hard they are to get into statistically, but I'd say it's definitely worth the try, especially if your D has a passion for creative writing. I personally know someone who goes to Kenyon--we met at a pretty selective creative writing program--and she is a marvelous fiction writer. Bottom line here--most creative writing programs at colleges will expect you to submit your work--so it's important to get over the fear of having others evaluate your work.

Not that hard to get into, but generally not really worth it. The creative writing professors are, on the whole, pretty mediocre. You're probably better off writing on your own and getting involved in one of the student literary journals.
