D is incoming freshman and will be living in Watson? She would like a TV and cable. I would like to know if there are tvs in the common areas and if cable is available. I am not a big fan of the cable companies and don't need another monthly bill. Thanks

Common rooms usually have TVs (yet to encounter a dorm without a TV in the common room) and they come with basic cable.

All lounges are equipped with cable TV, at no charge to students.
All dorm rooms have cable access, it costs $108/semester to use it. (Interestingly, my daughter's college gave all dorm rooms basic cable access for free... and she attended a much less expensive college).

This may be something your daughter needs to work out with her roommate. If neither the roommate nor your daughter want cable, then you're fine. But if the roommate wants it and your daughtern doesn't, and the roommate ends up paying the full price but your daughter gets the benefit of watching it for free... could be a source of friction.

My son is a recent Lafayette grad and my daughter attends another college. Virtually every student has a tv in their dorm room these days. I hated that idea when we first looked at colleges for them, remembering "back in my day" when we gathered in the lounges to watch tv. But it turns out the kids gather in each others' rooms to watch sports, movies on DVD, and play video games. They're still socializing, just not in the lounge. I was afraid it would be everyone by themselves watching TV, but that doesn't seem to be the case.

I disagree with the TV statement. I know a lot (a big chunk) of my friends don't have a TV in their room. TVs in the lounge, but not necessarily in your room.

sixstringrocker, since you are a current student I will bow to your more accurate knowledge.

Also it occurs to me now that perhaps the reason Lafayette requires students to pay for cable TV in their rooms is that the cable TV in the lounge is free. My daughter's college doesn't have dorm lounges with TV's in them, so perhaps that's why they provide it for free in the dorm rooms.

My son does have a tv but no cable. He has mentioned it a few times but so far has decided against the expense. He almost gave in last year when Game of Thrones, second season was about to start until he realized that he could watch on his computer. He is so used to watching things on his computer that even when he is home, he often uses his computer instead of the much larger tv. I think that his tv is used mostly for games.

I agree with lotsofquests. Most of the 'watching' is done on computers. TV is mainly to play games.

Yeah, there are many websites that allow you to watch lots of popular movies, tv shows, etc. The one I use often is yourtvseries.eu, which has practically every popular drama/sitcom I can think of. I brought a TV last year, but I found myself not really using it very much at all (although my roommate ended up using it more than I did). In hindsight, I would NOT bring a TV. It's not worth the space.

Hi - I have a few questions after visiting Lafayette.
It doesn't seem like a college town. Do students hang out on campus on weekends? What is there to do if not in a frat?
Would you say it is a party campus?
If you don't have a car are you stuck on campus all the time or are there shuttles anywhere? Any trips like ski trips?
How do students get home for breaks? Any shuttles to airport? thanks.

Currently, there are four frats at Lafayette. Approximately 20% of guys are in a fraternity. so no, Lafayette is not run over with frats.

patsfan95, the college runs shuttles to area shopping. The Easton Bus Terminal is only a few blocks from campus in downtown Easton and there are frequent busses from there to both Newark and Philadelphia airports, as well as busses to Port Authority Bus Terminal in Manhattan.

I'll defer to current students as to what goes on on campus during the weekends.

zobroward, "overrun" with frats is information that is 20 years out of date. I'm not sure if there are actually 4 frats left, as one was just closed down a couple weeks ago. I think that might only leave 3 frats on campus.
