| Sponsored multicultural visits
Does Lafayette offer any type of campus visits to URM's that are paid for by the school?

| Int'l Students...
Molly123,
International students make up approximately 7% of the total student population of 2,400. If my math is correct, .07 times 2,400 = about 170.
For more information on the 'International Experience' at Lafayette, see: .: International Students Association :: Lafayette College :..

| URM Recruitment...
welldad,
Good question!
While we wouldn't pay for an individual URM to visit the campus, we do offer a two-day program every February called 'Prologue' that caters to URMs. Invitees get a free lunch and dinner out of it, but travel expenses and the like are not covered.

Justin -- Has there been any official word yet as to how many applications for admission Lafayette received this year? I recall that last year you wrote about the college's plans to step up recruiting in parts of the country that have historically produced few applicants in order to increase geographical diversity. Were these plans actually put into effect and, if so, any impressions as to how that effort is working out?

| Applicant Stats...
HV51,
Last year, 6,357 applied. This year, as I just heard while helping out with an information session this past Saturday, about 5,700 applied. Yes, this is the first year in a long span when applications went DOWN!
It seems, though, that other colleges are experiencing comparable declines. Most blame the poor economy; students are applying to only those schools they're seriously considering because of steep application fees.
Yes, we are still stepping up efforts to recruit more widely (see: Local Leadership for Admissions Outreach), but it'll take time to see if our efforts are worthwhile.

| URMs
UMM, what are URMs? Just curious.
As for apps, I bet that the numbers at state schools are up.

Minky,
Don't feel left out! URM = Under-Represented Minority. Admissions jargon, that's all.
Though I have no concrete data to back my thinking, I wouldn't be surprised to find those numbers up. It's all about 'bang for the buck' nowadays, no?

Molly123,
We don't provide a breakdown of the int'l student population on our website or in the literature. If you're really interested, consider emailing the President of the Int'l Students Association, Adekemi Egunsola, at egunsola@lafayette.edu.
If you'd like information to help you choose your residence hall, see post #485 (pg. 33) of the 'Lafayette Questions: Part II' thread in the Lafayette forum. If you're asking how an accepted student indicates his/her preferences, know that Res Life will eventually ask incoming students to complete an online survey.
