Roommate has no facebook - what does that mean?

I was curious: d was notified about roommate, but saw that r.m. has no facebook entry . I don't know anything about facebook. what might that mean, other than r.m. does not have a facebook entry? luddite, amish, not into computers?

is not having a facebook entry for incoming freshman normal or typical for most students nowadays?

Has she checked Myspace? Most of my friends have a Facebook, but some don't. I would say roughly 10% of my high school senior class does not have one. Your daughter probably has a perfectly normal roommate. Just becuase she doesn't wish to participate in one of the biggest generational trends doesn't make her abnormal.

I'm guessing you received the name of the roommate in the mail. It is very possible that the person goes by a different name or a nickname, whereas the name sent to you is her legal name. Some people use nicknames for the Facebook profiles, so it's possible she could be on Facebook and your daughter just didn't find her.

Quite honestly I think you are overreacting. Having a child go to college is a stressful and life-changing event, but there's no need to worry about every bump on the road.

And some people (me included) block their profile from coming up in a search. I'm only in high school, but I'm sure this won't be any different next year: my dad is paranoid about some creep finding his daughter's name, school, and picture on Facebook.

Neither of my daughters nor most of their friends have FB pages. I don't think it means anything.

more curious than worried - thanks for the input. D wondered aloud what it meant (I guess in her world she does a lot of FB), so I thought I'd throw the question out to the CC world.

A lot of people don't like having Facebook pages because they see it as an artificial social construct (do most people really have 200+ good friends?) or they're concerned about privacy issues. My roommate doesn't have a Facebook either for both of the above reasons, and she is just as technologically-savvy as I am.

Facebook used to not allow anyone in high school up until about two years ago, so high school students are still learning about it.

And I agree with IzzyD. People who put too much on their facebooks are actually weirder to me than someone who doesn't have one at all. Could be a good sign!

Sounds reasonable. Plus I know LU does a pretty good selection process (they do interviews, I think); so I am sure the roomie will be ok.
