At the suggestion of S'14's guidance counselor, I signed him up for the June 2 World History SAT II. He found it very hard. He said he hadn't learned half the stuff on the test. He had extended time, but I don't think it really helped.

Has anyone with LD taken this subject test? Do you think GC's advice was misplaced? I care less about the score than I do about S getting demoralized before he even starts. I feel bad I didn't get the right prep book -- he's been studying the Barron's Regents World History book (per advice from same GC). I didn't realize I should have bought him a SAT II prep book.

I have a tutor lined up for the summer who's worked with LD kids before and he'll prep for PSAT/SAT with him.

Any advice or suggestions from LD kids on how they handled subject tests?

For most schools, you don't have to take SAT IIs if you take the ACTs. That was what ShawD did.

ShawSon took both SATs and ACTs but needed a third SAT II for some Ivy. [He's seriously gifted but severely dyslexic]. He looked at and started to study for the History exam and then decided it was too much reading. He switched instead to the Literature exam because you didn't have to remember stuff, just interpret passages. And, he felt, he could intuit the kind of responses they wanted. He did remarkably well given the dyslexia.

See if you just do the ACTs and if not, check out literature or something in math/science.

^thanks. I should probably research his target schools and find out if they actually need subject tests or just ACT like you said. No need to make him take something he doesn't need.
