Actually I remember reading the post you are referring to and telling my girlfriend, who had applied to Lehigh, about it. When she checked it, she had been assigned an email. She received her official acceptance letter shortly after. A friend of ours who also applied, but did not find his name listed on the LDAP was in fact not accepted. For the class of 2008 it was definitely a way to get a heads-up on admission before the letters arrived.
I can't say for sure if Lehigh does this every year or if they do it for EA (my gf applied regular) or if it was just a fluke this year. But you definitely have nothing to lose by checking when the time comes.
This also happened to my son (who was admitted). He did have an email account before his official letter came. I would tend to doubt you would have an email account already if you are accepted ED; I bet they wait to set that up until the whole class is determined.
Good luck
