Armed Robbery - Campus Safety

I see that there was an armed robbery of some sorority girls in September. As well, two graduate students were murdered on campus in December 2007.

Are these isolated incidents that could happen anywhere or is there reason to believe that because of LSU's openness and surrounding area, there are legitimate safety concerns?

Do students feel safe on campus? Do safety concerns interfere with your enjoyment of LSU?

Would appreciate some frank feedback from current students.

Are you some kind of troll?

LSU is perfectly safe. There will be crime on any campus. LSU has 28,000 students- more people than in most towns. There is going to be crime.

Why would you think this person was a troll?

Any parent sending their child away to college is going to be concerned about crime.

Of course, there will be crime.

I'm sure the OP is interested in what kind of campus security there is at LSU.

Some colleges have a blue light system, a LIMO system.

Rather than insulting the OP, why don't you tell him/her what kind of campus security y'all have over there.

it's a safe campus, and there's free campus transit from like 5:30 PM till 2:00 AM or 3:00 AM from anywhere on campus to anywhere on campus, and a slight bit off campus too (I think).

There will be crime on any campus. LSU is its own precinct; the BR PD has assigned a number of officers just to the LSU campus. I've always felt safe, but it's probably not a good idea to walk campus alone late at night if you're a girl.

Thanks, thisdude. Did not know LSU had a free transit system like that. Let's hope the state doesn't slash that, too.

My guess that it's paid by student fees and not by the university directly.

I've never felt unsafe on campus. I definitely wouldn't go walking too far outside of campus in some parts. But in general, right around campus is safe.

The two murders were an anomaly. They also occurred in the graduate student housing, which is on the outskirts of some shady neighborhoods. Since that time, they have upgraded the security systems in that housing. In addition, since that time, I think there have been numerous undercover cops placed on campus.

The LSUPD website, LSU Police , has good information if you are concerned. Here's crime statistics for the last 3 years: http://appl003.lsu.edu/PubSafety/lsupolice.nsf/$Content/Crime+Statistics?OpenDocument

right. in a really twisted way, the murders were a good thing for campus safety. they pointed out some serious flaws, and the university and BR PD have renewed their commitment to student safety.
