How Catholic is Catholic?

I know that Marquette prides itself on being a Jesuit-founded university. Recently my Mom said to me, "I just learned ANOTHER friend's kid is going to Marquette. Should we check it out? Is it a big deal?" Upon doing so, I found they have a lot of qualifications for me (journalism and/or education major, marching band) and some other plusses (Midwest).

But I'm a pretty liberal vegetarian, a bit granola 'on the inside'. How strong is the Catholic/conservative presence there? If it's big, does it ever lean on oppressive? I like a good debate from a backed-in corner but I don't want to be outnumbered 100% of the time. =)

Parent's Perspective

There is no way you could describe Marquette's Catholic affiliation as being oppressive. Marquette is sponsored by the Jesuit religious order of Catholic priests. Some would describe the Jesuits as being on the liberal side of the Catholic faith. The mission of the school is based on the principals of the Catholic faith. There is a strong sense of community and community service to others. Its the Jesuit way. You will not be forced to participate in any religious services. You may choose to be involved to a level you are comfortable with, but no one will force the issue. About 60% of the student population is Catholic, but the percentage of Catholics who practice their faith is much lower that that number. The opportunity to practice any faith is available. It is what you want to make of it.

You might want to spend some time on the school's web site. It is not what some would describe as a "jock" school. They don't have a marching band because they don't have a football team. Basketball is king, but they don't need a marching band at the Bradley Center.

Firesoul (cool name by the way),

Brutus's answer is spot-on. You will be required to take Theology, but there are plenty of non-Catholic and even non-Christian-based courses to choose from. It's been awhile, but when I went to school at Marquette, we had all types of students there. I had friends that were Jewish, Muslim, Hindu and Agnostic.

I would encourage you to check out the list of student organizations on the Marquette Website to get an idea of the different types of students they attract.

I just wanted to clarify for the OP. While they don't have a marching band they do have a band that plays at all home basketball games and many big away games including all NCAA tournament games.
