| Listen to KatMT's advice. She is the head of a Musical Theater program at another college!
First, I would not sing Astonishing. While it is a great song, it is quite overdone in BFA auditions. A client of mine just mentioned wanting to sing it and I told her the same thing. That's two of you right there. In fact, she is also applying to MM! I also would not do I Speak Six Languages for the reasons Kat mentioned.
Kat mentioned composers from traditional musical theater with songs from pre 1970. However, MM has NO requirement that your songs must be pre 1970. I do not see that on their audition requirements. Some of your other schools may want that but this school doesn't, to my knowledge.
It is impossible to suggest songs without knowing your skills and type. Perhaps if you were very very specific about your skills, strengths, type, etc. and even provided songs you sing well, others could suggest songs of a certain kind that are worth looking at. That's hard to do without knowing you but might set you off in a direction to listen to sound clips of those songs and to choose some that might be suitable for you and then get the sheet music and run those songs with your voice teacher and get a live opinion as to which one is most appropriate that sells you. |

| thank you so much for your help! I had no idea that Astonishing was over done! Do you know if All Shook Up is overdone? My school just did that show and I was Miss Sandra in it, if that helps. Again thank you! |

| All Shook up is not overdone but I do not think the songs from that show are appropriate for a BFA in MT audition (which is why they are not overdone!). That show is a revue of existing songs, isn't it? It's a jukebox type musical with songs that are not from the MT canon, if I am correct. It has songs like Heartbreak Hotel and Blue Suede Shoes in it. You need to pick songs written for musicals by musical theater composers (that is a broad generalization, I realize). The songs in All Shook Up are not written for a musical and are not really MT songs themselves.
I suggested in my prior post a process you might want to undertake in terms of getting help. You also need to familiarize yourself with MT songs and shows and just listen to a LOT of them....listen to clips on Amazon or ITunes. Share with others your voice type, strengths, etc. and which songs you already sing well and maybe they can suggest others of a certain type which may not fit you just right as they don't know you via the internet but it would be a starting point and once you find songs that are appropriate for you, run through them with your voice teacher in person and see which one suit you the best. |

| Sorry hannahw89 if I gave erroneous information about Marymount and the pre- 1970s requirement. I was responding to your statement about a pre-1970s song being required.
I agree with Soozie that All Shook Up might not show the most off in terms of musical theatre repertory. I agree as well that you might want to listen to many musicals to get a sense of material that will show you off well in auditions.
Good Luck!!

| BroadwayBaby: I could have sworn I heard that for the MT minor they only take like 15 kids a year. So is that 50 number for the BA in Theatre performance or have they upped the number of spots? Because I'm sure more kids get in the BA Performance degree program than into the MT minor and BFA Acting programs. Perhaps I heard wrong. |

| Well when I had asked admissions a couple of months back they said that they admitted 36 MT minors in 2006. I'm not sure how many there were in this years freshman class but I assume it was about the same. |

| Some in the MT Minor program are in the BA, not the BFA for Acting. I have worked with someone who entered for the MT Minor but is in the BA. Not all who do a Minor in MT are in the BFA. The BA with a MT Minor is also by audition. |

| Yeah, and not everyone that goes into the BA does the minor. However you must be in either of the performance degrees to be eligible to do the minor, which is why I found that acceptance rate rather high. From what I do know, they don't have a specific number of slots like other schools. More of a roundabout number. |

| Would singing "In my own little corner" from Rogers and Hammerstein cinderella be really ridiculous? What about "On My Own" from Les Mis? |

| Both songs are EXTREMELY overdone. It is best to avoid EXTREMELY overdone songs. You do not have to find an obscure song but shouldn't sing the most common audition songs that exist either. It also would show a lack of knowledge of the musical theater repertoire. Listen to many musical theater songs to find other ones suited to your voice and get advice from a voice teacher who knows your strengths. There are plenty of other Rogers and Hammerstein songs! Even from Cinderella....."A Lovely Night" is a better choice than In My Own Little Corner and is not as overdone. I suggest avoiding Les Mis songs all together and they fall on almost all "do not do" lists, and most of all "On My Own" is the MOST overdone of them. |

| If you audition for MT is it possible to still be accepted to the BA theatre program and not the MT? Or is it very unlikely that you will be accepted to the BA theatre if you audition for MT and are not accepted there? |

| mayitami - this is a really good question. I can't remember if this was addressed at all during the info sesssion. My D was only interested in their BA with the MT minor. I would call MMC directly because their website is a bit confusing. |
