EA Discussion: Anxious Waiting to Commiserations

The title says it all. I have recently entered the Anxious Waiting phase, MIT is my top choice right now so I'm stressing hard.

Good luck to everyone! Hoping for good news on "mid-December"!

Have fun on your SATs alexx! I think my app is complete, as long as my recs got properly submitted... MIT give you a chance to submit missing stuff afterwards, if it was something out of your control right?

@napalm, That's correct. They will put up an announcement on the blogs (probably in the next 2-3 weeks) as they complete their filing of all documents. If they are still missing one of your pieces (that isn't something you submit directly, like a teacher's rec, for example) they will give you a brief opportunity to have those resent. For now, there's nothing to worry about.

Best of luck to you all. Remember, if you run around in circles, no work gets done :-p

I'm glad to have it out of the way, but I'm also a little sad too with the SAT IIs tomorrow for me. I had very little guidance when it came to picking high school courses so I'm *incredibly* lopsided, and unfortunately my weakness is bio/chem/physics (in the sense that I have taken only a year's worth of each!). So I will definitely not do well on the physics SAT I'm going to take tomorrow. I suppose I'll be able to finish my research at the uni I'm currently with if I stay here, but ah, still a little disappointing!!

9___6 alas!! good luck to the rest of you guys though, I'm sure you'll all do awesome (:

Neither of my evaluations is there, it's making me nervous because I have 0 faith in my counselor, especially for non CommonApp schools. Oh well, hopefully I don't have to resend in a couple weeks. I think I'll go ahead and bookmark the admissions blogs now.

My myMIT account now shows that everything has been processed with exception of the Midyear Report which is not available until after the new year. Now that admissions has everything, are they already starting the review process? Are EAs notified on December 15? Or, is it possible to get the notification prior to that time? Also, I am being recruited for a team sport, and the head coach is talking with his admissions liaison this week. Does this help expedite my application so that it is reviewed by admissions earlier?

No, you won't get your decision any earlier, I don't think. And yes, I'm pretty sure they're already reading applications.

Yes, as application folders are completed, they are handed out to readers. Each application is read by several different readers over the course of the next few weeks, so there's really no "earlier" and "later" -- an application that is read early by one reader will be put back into the pool to be read later by another reader. Being recruited for a sport doesn't make any difference in this process.

In early December, the readers will come together and discuss (and make a decision on) every single application over the course of about a week to ten days. When they are sufficiently far through the selection process that they know when they will be done, they will announce the EA decision date on the blogs. Typically, the decision date is announced near the end of the first week of December, and the date itself typically falls between December 10 and December 20. On the day decisions are released, you will be able to log into a separate website and view your decision.

They go through all the applications one by one in 7-10 days? 0.o

On the website it says

Once your application is complete, it will first be read by a senior admissions officer who will consider your application in a holistic manner, within its proper context. Strong applications will then be evaluated by additional admissions officers, who will summarize it at length for the committee.

So do some unqualified applications get read by one person and then rejected?

I need to take my mind off this process, I've gotten nothing done the last couple days since I've been preoccupied refreshing the blog page... And my evaluations aren't in yet...

Yup. They divide up into small groups (~3 people), so a number of people can be discussed at once. But it's 7-10 very long, very tiring days.

Yes, but it's a very small number -- people who have things like a string of D's.

No worrying! MIT is still processing a mountain of paper.
