Relax...1085 by my count, but that probably doesn't mean anything, because not everyone who accepts HAS to sign the guestbook, and there's still nothing to confirm that people who declined the offer got their entries deleted. 1085 would be an slight over-enrollment for MIT, I believe.

1085 would be over-enrollment for a class of 1040, but are you allowed to comment more than once on the guestbook?

I was also under the impression that only those who have enrolled would be allowed to sign the guestbook...is that not true? If so, we may be able to reason that some have signed without actually matriculating...

Some people who declined did not take their name of the guest list. It's not automatic. My friend who is going to Harvard deleted his entry for the guest book before he submitted the decline form.

You can only sign the guestbook once, so each entry = 1 person. I think it's possible that students who chose to defer matriculation for 1 or 2 years would still be allowed to sign the guestbook. I dont know the statistics about how many people actually do that, and you also have to remember that students who deferred matriculation from one or two years ago will be entering in this class, so I can't imagine the number would be affected by that very much.

They're either systematically going through the names and deleting people who declined the offer of admission, or the system does it automatically and all 1085 people who are on there right now will be bona fide MIT freshmen. Also considering its unlikely that EVERYBODY who accepted chose to sign the guestbook, that'd be a significant over enrollment. So if we're gonna use the guestbook and the guestbook alone, I can't see the waitlist being very useful this year. But it'd be silly to draw those kinds of conclusions without knowing the whole picture. Just be patient and wait for admissions to blog something.

I know people on the guest book who aren't going. Not sure how many of those there are. I think once you decline, you can no longer access the guest book EVEN IF you are still on it.

Ok, truth about the guestbook-

If you choose to attend another college, your entry is not deleted. Nor are you required to sign the guestbook. You can only sign the guestbook once.

Due to the first two reasons, the guestbook is not necessarily accurate.

idk about the guestbook tho--i signed it as soon as i got accepted, b4 i found out the results from other colleges & of course before i decided not to go to mit

The Tech has an article about this year's yield: 66 Percent Accept MIT’s Offer Of Admission; May Admit Off Waitlist - The Tech

It says that 1031 students accepted.
