  • Fee Waiver Used?: NO
  • SAT I 650 Math 610 CR 700 Writing
  • SAT IIs: 600 World History 580 Spanish (with listening)
  • GPA, Weighted and Unweighted: 3.9 Weighted
  • Rank: 3/30
  • ACT: 28
  • APs (including this year's): Environmental Science AP
  • IBs (including this year's:
  • Senior Yr Courseload: Rigorous (Note: Environmental Science AP). Marriage & Family, Pre-Calculus, Honors Biology, World Cultures, Short Story, (haha yes, that is an easy class...sue me!), Spanish 4
  • Number of Apps from Your School: none
  • Other stats (Awards, etc.):
  • ECs listed on app: Class Representative (one of only 4 in class), Poetry, Captain of Baseball team (won league)
  • Job/Work Experience: Work at my farm, but only during the summers, and not too much, so i doubt this really helped
  • Essays (subject and responses): AMAZING. Wrote about how I feel like the animals i live with on my farm are people...hard to explain, but it was really good, my teachers said it was one of the best this year
  • Teacher Recs: incredible, especially since i was one of the top three in the class
  • Counselor Rec: Don't have a counselor at our school...
  • Interview (feel, interviewer and general location): Ehh, this could have been a weak point. I felt really awkward and clammy. I perspired a lot and mumbled too much. This isn't the strongest part of my application
  • Hook (TASP, RSI, Research, etc.): One of the top students in my school (one of the top 3 students), work hard, play hard, etc.
  • State or Country: Missouri
  • School Type, Average Stats of School (if available): NA
  • Ethnicity: White
  • Gender: Male
  • Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): Parents went to iowa
  • Strengths: Class rank, SAT writing (got a 700 out of 800 woot woot!)
  • Weaknesses: Not enough extra-curriculars
  • Why you think you were accepted/deferred/denied: I think they noticed that i've overcome struggles in order to achieve greatness, and therefore accepted me. I'm also a very good writer.
General Comments/Congratulations/Venting/Commiserations,etc: Very surprised I got in early, but happy. Definitely feel like I will thrive at MIT. I'll be on this forum throughout today so feel free to shoot me (no pun intended!) some questions about how to get in.

  • Advice? Commiserations? Feel like bragging?:
    - Should have sent my Siemens-Westinghouse research paper?
    - Maybe also should have done an interview (which I scheduled today).

I've got to say, this was surprising and somewhat disappointing. :/ I thought the rank would help for sure, considering how ridiculously competitive a class of over 1000 is (our school has over 4250 people). But oh well, I guess I'll just submit my research paper and do the interview for RD....

Sorry this is a little late, but here goes.

Accepted

Stats:
  • SAT:2330 (800 CR, 770 M, 760 W)
  • SAT II: Chemistry: 800, Math IIC: 770
  • ACT: N/A
  • GPA: weighted, 4.588 (out of 4.8)
  • Rank: 1/361
  • Other Tests (AMC, AP, IB): AP US History: 4, AP Chemistry: 5
Subjective
  • Essays: Excellent essays. I think these are what got me in. I chose to write about the "Describe where you come from" prompt, and my English teacher said it was really cute. It also conveyed why I wanted to be an engineer.
  • Teacher Recs: One I read, it was decent, above average. The other one, I didn't read, but my teacher said it was long and well written.
  • Counselor Rec: Counselor barely talks to me. It was one of those generic template ones that all students get.
  • Supplementary Material: I wrote the "what have you created" essay about band. It was a creative essay, not the formal type. I mainly used it to convey my passion for music.
  • Hook(recruited athlete, legacy, Nobel Prize): No hooks, I'm pretty normal.

  • Awards: State placement for Envirothon, two NJ Science League plaques, awards my marching band has won.

Stats:
  • SAT: 760M + 690CR + 660W = 2110 Overall
  • SAT II: 750 Math 2, 760 Physics
  • ACT: Did not attempt
  • GPA: ~4.3 W, 4.0 UW. My school does not offer AP, only honors in grades 11 and 12. I have gotten As in the most difficult classes I could take.
  • Rank: School does not rank by exact numbers (4 of 100, for example), but I'm in the highest percentile ranking.
  • Other Tests (AMC, AP, IB): None
Subjective
  • Essays: I really liked my essays. I wrote about how witnessing my mother return to college while I was in middle school helped motivate me. I also submitted a supplementary essay about my senior project. I'm currently researching various ways to grow algae on an industrial scale (for biofuel production).
  • Teacher Recs: These should have been fantastic. I have a great friendship with both of the teachers, and they both seemed very enthusiastic about me going to MIT. I also had my dean of students (who I also know quite well) submit a recommendation. I haven't read any of these recommendations, but I believe the letter from my dean spoke of my leadership abilities within the community.
  • Counselor Rec: This should have been decent as well, although I don't know him quite as well as the aforementioned staff members.
  • Supplementary Material: Essay on algae-based biofuel (see above)
  • Hook(recruited athlete, legacy, Nobel Prize): Probably my senior project on algae-based biodiesel. If not, my school has really helped me develop my skills in public speaking and teamwork.

  • Awards: Rotary Youth Leadership Award (Rotary International)
  • Advice? Commiserations? Feel like bragging?: I don't have too many comments, but I think I still have a decent shot in regular decision. I'm guessing that I was deferred because of my standardized test scores. In hindsight, I probably should have tried the ACT as well (or maybe studied a bit more). However, MIT still admits many people at my level. I believe there is hope

  • Rank: 1/261 (1 of twelve)
  • Other Tests (AMC, AP, IB): None, but took every AP course offered besides AP English
Subjective
  • Essays: I think my main essay was awesome--I wrote how I lost an important school election and then rebounded from it. The point of the essay was to show my resilience and determination.
  • Teacher Recs: I'm pretty sure they were great, especially my Humanities rec.
  • Counselor Rec: Most likely GREAT. He and I really get along.
  • Supplementary Material: Two recs: One from a camp counselor who was really impressed by my ability and work ethic during a summer camp, and another from my Taekwondo instructor (known him for seven years)
  • Hook(recruited athlete, legacy, Nobel Prize): Mostly my character and resolve to make a difference in the world (and that was no B.S.) I was the Student Government Tech Director during Junior year and did a LOT of stuff with computers.

Reason why I think I got deferred: While I think I met all of their criteria for the "match" between me and MIT, I never entered any competitions and never won major academic awards. Had I done some of that, I think I would've gotten in.

  • Advice? Commiserations? Feel like bragging?: My son would really like to have been accepted. I am in awe at the qualifications of both accepted and deferred candidates posting here. I just don't believe that these qualifications are all that common and I suspect that many of the deferred candidates posting here will get good news in the Spring -- from MIT or somewhere better. My son's deferral notice mentioned providing mid term grade reports which will be available in January. His interim grades this semester look quite promising so I hope those boost his chances in the next round.
