Officially turned down HSP for MIT!.... And it's so true that I am very attracted to the intensely academic feel of MIT. People there are just as passionate as I am about the hard sciences, something that other top schools lack. Everyone does something related to the science that is cool, and merely bumping around with people smarter than you are is empowering.
But I'll probably regret this statement next fall when the a rain of psets crush my soul |

That's tough in the sciences, unless you happen upon a project that's almost finished when you start on it as a freshman or something.
My paper was published when I was a second-year grad student. But it was originally submitted when I was a junior, so I wrote it on my CV and on my grad school apps as "in revision", which was fine for those purposes.

Serious Answer: I guess if you really really hate math and science and/or are just plain bad at it- my ex-girlfriend who is now at Princeton wouldn't have stood a chance at MIT, for instance. She just isn't very math/science oriented. They are the people who major in stuff like Communications or Theater or Psychology in college at such elite institutions...eager and enamored by the idea of getting such a highly-esteemed degree but forever knowing that they can never do the hardcore mental workouts the big boys and girls do..
Not-So-Serious Answer: MIT DIDN'T MAKE PLAYBOY TOP 25 PARTY SCHOOLS THIS YEAR... HOW HORRIBLE!!!!

Um.... As far as I'm concerned, MIT is the first place where I met SO many smart girls who love physics, math, bio, chem etc...
And if MIT girls are not "hot" by your standards, there's aways Wellesley, Vassar and other schools next door (no offense intended mollie )

Isn't Vassar in New York? That's a little far to travel for girls.
There are MIT guys who won't date MIT girls. I happen to think they're moderately odious, but hey, to each his own.

Oops! Well, let's say Harvard them. Boston has a gazillion college students, so you're not restricted to MIT. Heck, I saw more BU, Wellesley girls at MIT frat parties than actual MIT girls.

| There are actually a lot of good reasons that MIT guys feel this way. It has nothing to do with individual girls, but rather averages. Also these reasons don't necessarily have much to do with "looks." MIT guys are smart enough to know there are way more important things than a girls appearance.
Again, I'm not saying all or even most MIT guys think like this. But I do know a fair number, and they are not evil monsters, but rather extremely rational and fair thinking people.

Hey, I just think they're moderately odious -- just the ones who won't date MIT girls, not the ones who happen not to.

Charles Lin wrote a funny column that relates to this phenomenon of some MIT guys not wanting to date MIT girls. You can find it here: Squid vs. Whale - The Tech
My favorite excerpt:
"Though both beavers and MIT students achieve degrees in engineering, the similarities stop there. First and foremost, beavers are physically gifted and socially adept animals. We don’t need a swim test! We were born to swim. We are also highly evolved when it comes to communicating and socializing as evidenced by our skills in romance, something many MIT students lack. Upon reaching adulthood, all beavers easily find their mates for life. More importantly, we find mates within our own species and see no need to bus “Wellesley Girls” into our domain."
My MIT daughter has been dating an MIT boy for nearly a year now, and personally, I think they're both very good looking. But you just have to take my word for it, because if I posted a link to a picture, I'd be persona non grata for life.

^^I have just one question. Is your cc handle going to be your new email at MIT? Because that would be awesome...
Remember...women love confidence.

Not to sound weird, but I do sense a peculiar and yet unfathomable attraction toward the intense nerdiness, and intellectual capacity of MIT girls... You can find pretty girls everywhere, but girls as smart and crazy about science/math as MIT girls are extremely rare.

^^ Geez, if I could find girls who'd actually listen to me when I open my mouth about math, I'd be
They exist, but are few in number where I come from.
Amusing what this discussion has come down to!
