Congrats to everyone who was accepted! My first official rejection. Woot.

Decision: REJECTED

Stats:
  • SAT I (by section): 770/770/760
  • SAT IIs: 800 Math 2; 800 US History; 800 Physics
  • ACT: N/A
  • APs: 5,5,4,4 (taking 6-7 ap's this may)
  • IBs: N/A
  • GPA: 95/100 UW (full ap courseload)
  • Rank: Top 10%
  • Other stats: N/A
Subjective:
  • ECs listed on app: Very involved in a select few for 6+ years, + other ones, overall very good. None of the long term ones are science/math related though.
  • Job/Work Experience: Software engineering internship for summer, small jobs during year
  • Essays (subject and responses): For fun -- music editing; Prospective major -- CS; End of the world -- wrote about experience at a zoo (wrote the day the app was due.. yeah.. very bad essay prompt -.-)
  • Teacher Recs: Good
  • Counselor Rec: Very good
  • Interview: Very good, 2 hours
  • Supplemental Rec: yes, very good one
  • Hook (if any): There are no hooks for MIT... except being black ... which I am not &.&
Location/Person:
  • State or Country: NY
  • School Type, Average Stats of School (if available): Top school, public
  • Ethnicity: White
  • Gender: M

    * Strengths: EC's; Tests; Recs
    * Weaknesses: No research, not a lot of engineering ec's, could have higher GPA maybe. Also one essay was mediocre.
General Comments/Congratulations/Venting/Commiserations,etc: MIT picks peculiar people.. some people that are passionate and qualified get rejected and some get accepted, some people that seem average also get accepted.. the people who apply are already way above average. Tip to juniors: If you want to get into MIT you need to have great essays and do very well in higher level math and science classes. I don't think I'm as engineering/science oriented as the typical MIT student. I also left this app for the very last day, was not an ideal school for me, although its incredible for engineering. Oh well cheers!

[b]General Comments/Congratulations/Venting/Commiserations,etc: As I have posted somewhere MIT has always been a school I have the utmost respect for and admission seems impossible to me. As I am international and have not won any scientific awards or have participated in any scientific ECs, MIT is probably the hardest school to get into. I am perfectly fine with this. MIT wasn't too high up on my list anways. I don't think I would fit in too well anyways. Congrats to the 1500 people and the rest. Guys lets hope for the best. Going off the MIT forum. See you guys on other college forums on CC.

  • Teacher Recs: Bio teacher-talked about my passion for learning and not just for good grades, English teacher-said I was "one of the most remarkable people of any age he's met"...ergo: amazing, sparkling recs. (probably what convinced the adcoms, i'm guessing...)

  • Hook (if any): i'm good looking
Location/Person:

  • School Type, Average Stats of School (if available): large public. not terrible, not great. considered good in the Midwest.
  • Ethnicity: Asian
  • Gender: Male
General Comments/Congratulations/Venting/Commiserations,etc: eh, they released the decisions before 1:59...but i got over the rejection in like three seconds. well, a little over three seconds (.1415926.... over three seconds to be exact). For class of 2010, start your essays early and remember MIT is NOT commonapp so you have to write a ton of separate essays. I think essays make the difference in many cases. Congrats to those who got in! And to those who didn't, we will go to Harvard and own one of MIT's pranks

Stats:
  • SAT I (by section): 760 CR, 800 M, 770 W (11 Essay)
  • SAT IIs: 800 Bio-E, 800 Math II, 790 Chem, 780 Math I
  • ACT:
  • APs: 5s on Chem, Bio, Calc AB, Calc BC (and AB subscore)
  • IBs:
  • GPA: ~3.8
  • Rank: ~30/157
  • Other stats: lots of dual-enrollment classes; advanced math (calc 3, lin. alg, diff eq), chem, bio etc.
Subjective:
  • ECs listed on app: Science Bowl (went to nationals), Math Team, Tennis, Knowledge Bowl, other crap
  • Job/Work Experience: tutoring, research shadowing, bio/math research internship
  • Essays (subject and responses): don't remember/don't want to look it up, but they were decent and well-done
  • Teacher Recs: pretty good, bio prof and chem teacher who have known me for a long time
  • Counselor Rec: don't know how good, probably generic
  • Applied on: RD, right before deadline
  • Hook (if any):
Location/Person:
  • State or Country: WA
  • School Type, Average Stats of School (if available): rural college-town high school, decent but nothing great
  • Ethnicity: Asian (indian)
  • Gender: Male
General Comments/Congratulations/Venting/Commiserations,etc: I'm an Asian male whose stats aren't perfect, so I completely expected this rejection (and I wasn't that enthusiastic about MIT anyways, so it's not a big deal). It's not really a complaint or anything, it's just what it is. Perhaps if I hadn't gotten a C+ in a book-reading class last spring or a C in English mid-semester (it'll be changed...but too late for admissions), things would be okay. Bs probably would have been acceptable enough, but the Cs dropped my GPA and class rank. I would have needed some superhook to get in with my current transcript stats, and I don't have one. ANYWAYS. Congrats to those who got in; enjoy your time if you go.
