  • SAT I (by section): 2400
  • SAT IIs: 800 Math 2, 800 Physics
  • APs: 5 Calc BC, 5 APCS AB
  • GPA: 3.93/4.5, steadily increasing from 3.4 to 4.4 over the years
  • Rank: ~10th/270, but only that it's top 10% is reported
  • Other stats: AIME every year since 8th grade (got a 6 that year, then stopped focusing on math and semi-plateaued), missed USAMO by 1.0 out of 172.5 index points in 10th grade
Subjective:
  • ECs listed on app: Captain of math team, president/teacher of free school SAT clinic, MMA (including school club), tennis, extreme skiing, violin, guitar, math, programming and other computer/electronic stuff
  • Job/Work Experience: Freelance programmer, soccer ref
  • Essays (subject and responses): Not too great/rushed
  • Teacher Recs: Good, I hope
  • Counselor Rec: No idea
  • Applied on: Late December
Location/Person:
  • State or Country: MA
  • School Type, Average Stats of School (if available): Very good suburban public (~1000 people), sends lots to Harvard but very few to MIT
  • Ethnicity: White
  • Gender: Male

My interviewer, upon hearing me speak, pretty much told me I'd be better off at Harvard, though, and my Harvard and Yale interviewers said I was pretty much perfect for those schools (in about those words), so I'm hoping the rejection is a judgment on my MIT-ness and not my overall applicant quality

General Comments/Congratulations/Venting/Commiserations,etc: I generally never post here, only lurk (i should post more though), but did this because i wanted to give a little back to college confidential, you guys helped me so much in my college apps. Anyway good luck to all of you for future college decisions, congrats on those that got accpeted!!!! I think one of the reason why i got rejected may have been my interview, I had to do it over the phone and it was awkward, totally sucked donkey balls

P.S. dunno if the format thingy will turn out right lol

[b]General Comments/Congratulations/Venting/Commiserations,etc: All I have to say it WOW and YAY!!! I was not expecting this. At all. This is tied for the top college (with Caltech!) that I applied for and got accepted to. I thought that I would never be offered a spot at MIT in general since it is so competitive and, as it seemed, out of reach. But another discouraging things was that I applied as a junior so I thought that there would be many more other more experienced and better-stats senior that would be applying. But WOW! Here it is. I had my Pittsburgh Regional FIRST Robotics Competition today until 5PM, so I rushed to look up MIT's decision on my dad's blackberry and when I saw I was soooo excited!

I was not thinking that I would get accepted to both Caltech and MIT, but now I am psyched!!! Sunny California and smaller school vs. Nuclear Engineering bachelors and world-known professors. Hmmmm.... it's going to be a hard decision but I think I'm going to try to go to PREFROSH and CPW. Now the major deciding factor is going to be financial aid.

My biggest obstacle was finding out how to write the essays/figuring out the topic. But my suggestion is to write about yourself from various perspectives so that the admissions committee will get to know you well. And I found, at least for me, that it is not necessary to spend a couple of months over an essay- you just have to get that writing spark and it will turn out to be a passionate, sincere essay. Go class of 2013!!!

I feel pretty honored to have made the waitlist and not have been outright rejected. However, I will probably not stay on the waitlist because it's too iffy and will hopefully make it in elsewhere. Congrats to everyone!

General Comments/Congratulations/Venting/Commiserations,etc:

u most probably say my stats is terrible afta u read the above , right?
well, in my school, grade deflation is much greater than how it can b elite schools in the same province.I had some problems with my family since the second semester in grade 10. besides, most teachers never really give students fair grades(4 example, even my phys teacher, who is hired from the most elite school in my province, assumed i fabricated the numbers n data i wrote in my lab reports just because he knew most of my classmates did that.as a result, he gave me shabby marks.damn, i'm a wannabe-physicist so how could i need to do such a thing!n my maths: 7.2/10! how low. my math teacher, who is also hired, very rarely let us see the test papers. n i could only be speechless). But i just couldn't freely tell MIT adcom that such things do happen in my school 'coz my school couldn't b more low-reputationed. Perhaps, MIT adcom could never understand that!
SAT: no book reviewed, no course taken,i only read old-fashioned books 'coz my family is really poor even compared to applicants in my country. To tell the truth, i earned money 4 the tests n application since grade7(unknowingly though). I took both types only once(n late, too- sat1 in jan).Bah, i was sick continuously 3 days b4 n on the Jan test date, really hungry on SAt 2 phys. i had to choose SAT 1 instead of toefl 'coz toefl ibt is much more expensive.

Awards: many in grade 9. 1 school-leveled in grade 11. none in grade 12 'coz in grade 11, i learned that the manager of dept of edu n trainin' in my province doesn't really approve of students in non-elite schools taking high-leveled competitions as i asked 4 such a privilege once.I also could hardly tell adcom this.

I knew I had to prove to MIT adcom dat i could use english fluently. I told my EC dat I watched MIT ocw vid easily. but once again, dat might not reach adcom. my interview was real good though i couldn't say all i needed to say.
At 1st, i thought MIT at least would put me in waitlist. But da fact is...well, i guess either MIT did not read my app carefully 4 some reasons like my teachers's writing were bad etc or they did but they dared not take risk by admittin' an extremely distant student who had such normal/bad records.if it's truly da 2nd case, MIT kinda fears risks---> lose some respect!
I assume i will b rejected by the rest of those school i applied to 'coz i 've always deemed MIT the school whose applicants' contexts r considered most carefully. Hence, this may b my 1st n also last comments on this site.
In general, congrats to those who got in. wish u shared with me some 4tune tho'.(ah, i really dont mean u got in merely by luck). n get over this with me, mates who r in da same situation.
Still, love MIT. hope i'll b there afta my transfer application next yr.
