Leadership positions?

I know alot of schools like to see you take up a leadership position in an organization you've been a part of for a long time. But if I don't have any leadership positions despite having some quality ECs, will that necessarily count against me?

It all depends on the overall picture. A lot of colleges want leadership positions because this shows commitment, perseverance, and dedication towards your activities. To a certain extent, the presence of leadership positions also indicate your ability to work in a team and communicate with others. However, a lack of leadership positions doesn't necessarily count against you either - initiating a community-wide food pantry drive for the homeless without being the President of the Community Service Club means a lot more than being the President and not doing anything except arranging meetings. It all depends on the holistic view conveyed through your essays, teacher recs, list of activities; there's no checklist that explicitly requires leadership.
