Deadline Details

So I have everything in (interview, application1, tests), and I will have application2 submitted on time, so I was wondering what would happen if my teacher recommendations were not processed by that time. They were sent around a week ago via USPS priority mail (2-3 days to arrive in Cambridge). I'm freaking out because one of the envelopes has my humanity teacher's recommendation, and my research mentor's recommendation. (P.S. - I sent these items to 77 Massachusetts Avenue, as posted on the letter of recommendation form.)

Nothing, and you should not freak out, not even a little bit.

MIT is getting a huge volume of mail right now, and it takes time to sort through all those application pieces. At some point (usually mid-November), Matt or someone in admissions will post a blog entry saying they've sorted through all the mail, and at that point, you should consider anything that's not processed to be lost in the mail. But at this point, it's probably safe to assume your letters have arrived at MIT and are waiting in the queue to be sorted into your folder.

However, even at that point, you should not freak out. You can just get your teachers to give you another copy of their recommendations, and you can mail them again. If it's some time past the deadline, Matt will post the admissions office's fax number, and you/they can fax the recommendations.

MIT doesn't start reading applications right away, so if your application isn't totally in Cambridge on November 1, there's no reason to panic.
