NYTimes: MIT Considers Increase in Student Body by 300

Today's NYTimes included an article about this...
That's a 7% increase. The idea is to return the ugrad student body to the size it was in the 1980s and 90s. It will depend on student housing. For those hoping this means extra slots: not so fast. It's likely they'll open it up to more transfers.

it's not going to make admissions much easier. as some of the 300 spots are gonna be open for upperclassmen and transfers

MIT has been considering a lot of things for awhile now. I wouldn't get too excited about this.

For those who care, back in the day when things were more hardcore and fraternity and dorm rush happened at the same time, they could admit more students because so many of the guys would move to their fraternities. Why the high rate of participation? Well, once MIT started admitting more female students, they needed somewhere to put them, so there was a large push to get MIT men to move into frats so that there would be more housing for the girls
