My daughter, Jill is going to be a first year student at McGill. I'm going back and forth as to whether to buy her a pair of heavy snow boots for the Winter. We live in Florida. So she's never owned a pair before. I want her to be prepared if there is a ton of snow, but on the other hand, do not want to spend a fortune if it doesn't live up to it's hype. Those of you who are currently attending McGill, how bad is the snow? Should I get her a pair of boots or will she be okay with just sneakers and what not? Any advice would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

Boots are a good idea. I wore sneakers this past winter and I'll never be able to wear them again (They were destroyed). Don't go too crazy. She won't need anything really heavy-duty. But boots are good. Let her buy them on her own when she gets here when it's time. That way she'll have a better understanding of what's needed, style, etc.

What Tasnia said. It's better to buy winter gear in Montreal at the right time. I know some people wear sneakers throughout, but the amount of stuff that ends up on the road and sidewalks (snow, slush, ice, water, sand, salt in large quantity) will destroy regular footwear and make it a real pain to walk without the proper sole. You really need the warmth and waterproofing at times.

Boots are an essential, along with a warm coat, hat and gloves. You will not
find an adequate wardrobe of winter items in Florida--I agree that Jill should wait to buy winter gear in Montreal. A good pair of boots can mean the difference between dean's list and dropping out (semi-serious).
