A multi-tool and a vapor proof flashlight. Any dive shop will sell an inexpensive little dive that that is sealed and thus vapor proof. Also an extra duffle bag to bring their treasures.

personally i use a surefire light, but with the lithium batteries....i try to get a pelican from somewhere on the ship (gold locker), they've got a real nice warranty, however, the warranty doesn't cover children under 5 years of age...no joke

A great digital camera is the olympus waterproof/shockproof/freezeproof camera.....also a world phone or world sim card may be a good idea.

the pelican light is great, i had mine slip out of my pocket and fall about 25 feet into the bilge, i wiped the muck off and it was still fulling functioning. i also have the olympus camera, it's been great! it's rugged, and small-- and not too expensive.

Thanks for ALL the great ideas!
Are there any day(s) in between last final exams & when B/Splitters go off to sea? Or does it depend on what port they ship out from?

Also, when do they find out their assigned ship?

It seems to me that my kid knew his assigned ship by late April or early may.
As for when they leave, it will vary from Midshipman to Midshipman depending on a number of factors, such as where the ship is, when it will be in port and when the govt finally gets them their travel arrangements. Those Mids who will be attending Summer School will, obviously, be leaving a few weeks later.

I don't know why i don't remember my recognition day much...strange. I do remember being asked as a DI to assist on in one as an upperclassman...that was exciting. Lots of water on the deck...lol Trash cans full of water being dumped everywhere. what a mess
