New Plebe Parents!

Hi All,

First time posting here...We are proud parents of a New Plebe Candidate Class 2012.. Anticipating a great adventure and a wild ride with ups and downs ! So happy to have a forum like this with others who are experiencing the same situations ahead...

Question...How far is Glen Cove M from USMMA timewise?
We booked to stay there before Indoc...

Welcome to KP Parenthood & Congrats Snowshooz! Glen Cove Mansion is about 14 miles from the Academy. I'd plan on about a 45 minute drive to & from to be timely for events & reporting in.

We stayed there last July - 45 min is plenty of time. Congrats to you and your Plebe Candidate. I can hardly believe our son is finishing up his first year and will head out to sea in June.

TMR...A Question...You said your son is finishing his Plebe year and going out to sea in June...Does he have any time off at all between end of classes and leaving for sea?? *trying to prepare myself in advance*

It all depends on the ship the plebe will get on, sometimes they get a month off, sometimes they will leave right after their last final.

And thats B-splitters, those who go out in the winter.

A splitters get a decent vacation, but they miss Thanksgiving and the Winter Holidays.

Welcome Snowshooz to our world. All I can say is it is a very emotional experience. Indoc was a very hard day for me. I don't think I cried as much as I did on that day. I guess it must have been the cutting of the apron strings that did it. Parents Weekend and swearing in you will be filled with so much pride. Especially when you see your child in his uniform for the first time. Than comes the academic challenges and depression. And finally recognition when things seem to get a little brighter. My son is almost through with his Plebe year and I'm very proud of his accomplishments. Good luck to your son or daughter.

Welcome Snow! All the advice is right on target. Depending on where you live you may get to see your child more than others. What state are you in? Just plan on no summer vacation.....maybe he'll get a few days here and there, but just be prepared to not see him much!

Our son is in the class of 2010 and we have never seen him in the summer. He was at sea last year, will be at sea this year and is planning on spending next year at Quantico. Maybe we will see him the following year for a few minutes after graduation!

We are not planning on it - we are assuming he will get on a ship on the eastern seaboard rather than gulf coast. we went up in march for a long weekend and saw him, took him out for a steak dinner; our thinking was we would not see him until Nov. if he gets time off between end of classes and reporting for sea duty that will be a bonus and we'll send him a plane ticket. that's life!

And sometimes two Mids can end up at your house for two weeks while waiting on a ship to come in & they eat all your food. You can put them to work cutting down small trees, mowing & running to the grocery. Need stamps? Send a Mid. They love driving your car after they've not been in one for 6 months.

Its all the play it by ear scenario. Remember... Life is fun! Semper Gumby!

welcome snow.
the KP family is unlike anything you've ever seen. you can't go anywhere in the world without finding one of us.
for example, i was flying home from my first ship, and lo and behold next to me on the plane from Hawaii was a '93 grad. we all look out for each other, even if we've never met. just last week i met a '54 grad, and we sat and talked like we'd known each other all our lives. there are bonds made here that words can't describe.
this is a tough place. at times, it seems just about impossible. just remember that your kid is now on a great adventure. he/she'll call you at the edge of tears more than once cause they think they're going to break. they'll want to throw in the towel, give up and go to a regular college. we all go through these times. i wish i could say it gets easier with time, but it doesn't.
remind your kid that they're loved and that they made it this far, too far to quit. be understanding when they fail at something. eventually they'll hit a wall somewhere. it's designed that way. if i'm still here, that's proof that anyone can keep it up.

Winds up that alot of us on this site were all right next to each other in line at indoc. We didn't realize it until we saw a picture of all of us on line--right there one after the other. I was too busy trying not to cry, as were most of the other moms. We are all on this site now! (By the way, we waited until the last moment to let our kids go in...they were all at the back of the line!)

Everyone needs to wear a nametag. Both real name and screen name here. I am planning on doing so when I take my son Martin to Indoc in July.

Congratulations to you and your Plebe Candidate prepare for the ride of your life, you hug and kiss your baby goodbye and before you know it, he/she has grown up after indoc, then some more after recognition, then sea years one and two the child you say good bye to in July will be replaced with a responsible, thoughtful, respectful, self-confident adult, who will make you so proud your heart will melt just talking about your Plebe Candidate, Plebe, midshipman.
