GOOD NEWS! A new Dinghy Sailing team coach has been hired. He is the former coach of SUNY and we are hearing good things about him. At the first meeting of the Mids, there was a record turnout of interested sailors.
A fresh start? Here's hoping!

Just to clarify- We are in the process of hiring a new dinghy coach, and are currently going through the government hiring process. Until that is completed we will not be able to announce the new coach. We are hopefull that the process will be completed in the next few weeks and have high hopes for the team this season.

So answer to the first question "Is anyone worried about the state of KP's Intercollegiate Sailing Team" Short answer yes, alot of folks have been giving Cdr Gasoriak (Sailing Master) and Coach Dominique (Director of Intercolligiate Programs at the Waterfront) solicited and unsolicited advice. The USMMA Sailing Foundation, which is speperate but affiliated with the Alumni Association has been working with the Sailing master and others at the Academy to implement a lot of mandated changes and the ripples seem to just be settling. That said alot of us Waterfront Friends and Family remember the "glory years" mid 70's through late 90's when KP regularly was a top 10 ranked intercolligiate sailing program with a host of all-americans and we are all dedicated to and supportive of Chris Gasoriak's efforts to rejuvinate the program's winning ways.
Yes Chris posted on the Waterfront blog this past spring that the Dinghy Coach Matt Allen is/was leaving. Chris and Rick Dominique to my second hand knowledge have been actively seeking the right coach for the program. As you might imagine because of all the focus on the waterfront, but also because extra-curriculars must remain secondary to Academics and the Regiment, and the extreme limitations on recuruiting, coaching any sport at KP to success takes a special individual.
There will be all three sailing teams mentioned by deepsea, as well as the Power Squadron and the Crew Team.
Glenn66 from the description it sounds like you talked to Coach Ralf Seitz, one of the foremost offshore sailors (America'sCups, etc.) in the world. Mr. Seitz was the offshore coach, my understanding is he is still at the academy and actively involved as part of the Sailing Foundation but may have a new title/position.

Jasper - thank you for your insightful, valuable comments; especially the challenge of coaching Mids who must prioritize their incredibly demanding academic & regiment obligations. Touche. I have witnessed my DS as he struggled in his decision to miss practice because of a "do-or-die" exam - even just homework load. Beyond that, IMO, there was a morale issue amongst the Mids which was a direct result of the former leadership. My understanding was that most Mids had resigned from the team as a result of this moreso than workload demands - the latter just putting them over the top. It is neither here nor there as new blood was absolutely needed and now on its way. With this will come renewed energy amongst the experienced sailors and renewed interest amongst the regiment and incoming plebes ~ a sure recipe to success or, at the very least, improvement. To kick it off, I would love to see the Waterfront page Dinghy Sailing team website updated which hasn't been done in 3-4 years. PM me if I can help.

MMAMom2011: I too would love to see the page updated, I'm just a parent like you, who also happens to be an Alum that sailed. Maybe you could email Cdr Gasoriak, I believe he is the owner of the Waterfront Blog and might appreciate some help.

| Waterfront Web Page
Working on it- we are a little thin on staff right now, and given the choice between spending time on the water with the mids and updating the web page......you can imagine where we end up. The blog is much easier, and has been incredibly successful, so that's where most of the "news" ends up. I spent some time yesterday updating the Offshore section of the Web page, but any major updates will have to wait till winter.

As I said in my previous post, please let us know how you need help... there are many of us who are ready, willing & able. We know this transition must be sticky and are here to support you. I always thought that a Parents Waterfront Association might be in order for that very purpose.
Getting excellent feedback on the team's first week. So kudos to you and your colleagues deepsea for all that you do in working with these kids. The Mids are enthused, motivated and enjoying the drills = looks like a great season ahead. Go KP!

I agree with MMAMom2011, there are many parents and friends who are willing, able and anxious to help get the team back on their feet. Please don't hesitate to ask. I'm certain that the staff, coaches and team will be overwhelmed with the response.

Great jobs Midshipmen!
Sorry we didn't see you at Parents weekend, but looks like you were busy doing Kings Point proud.
Best of luck, keep it up!

Saturday: A windy day at Kings Point! Sailors were greeted with south winds at 15-20 knots that slowly built to over 20 by the early afternoon. A-division began the day in FJs and B in 420s, but FJs stayed ashore after lunch and only one fleet remained on the water throughout the day. 8 races were completed per division with 1 protest and 1 breakdown.
Sunday: A gorgeous fall day for sailing, with northwest winds slowly going north throughout the day and dying. 8 races were completed per division in conditions ranging from 15 knots to 6 knots. 1 protest was filed resulting in a DSQ from race 16B.
Army was a no-show and American (incomplete team) and Rochester (leaving early) also received no-shows.
Many thanks are due to the Kings Point Sailing Team for their outstanding work in running the regatta!
