Waivers

I am in the process of applying to the Merchant Marine Academy and I have a question. I finished my DodMERB test recently and I got a letter saying I failed to have vision correctable to 20/20. The letter said I can still try to get a waiver, but does this means that my chances of getting into the academy are low now? How hard is it to get a waiver?

It doesn't hurt your chances of getting in as long as you get the waiver. Just follow the DODMERB procedure for getting a waiver. They accused me of having asthma and i had to go to multiple doctors to prove i never had asthma and to get the waiver...according to DODMERB I still have asthma but hey what to doctors know. Its a long process but it can be done and you'll be able to get in.

Not sure what you mean by "Try to get a waiver". The above post is correct, the physical is sort of pass/fail. If you pass (get the waiver) there is no negative impact to your application. But I thought the waiver request was submitted automatically. What are they saying you need to do to 'try' for the waiver?

There is a link there for DodMERB. The moderator under the DodMERB link just retired from DoDMERB and can help you with any questions. Good luck!!!
