Anyone with no FA or scholarships?

hey,everyone~~
it seems that so many of u got FA or scholarships of MIAMI.but unfortunately i'm the one with no FA or scholarships.
is that available to get some scholarships for the second year?the answer from the AO is QUITE COMPETITIVE.Still I'm not sure about the degree of QUITE COMPETITIVE.anyone can tell me something about that?thank u~~

Why don't you call the financial aid office and express your concern? Maybe they can come up with something for you this year.

Did everybody file FASFA? Even if you are nowhere close to be eligible for any need based FA, MIAMI strongly recommends to file it.

Why file it if your income puts you above a level where you are likley to get $? I went thru the whole process last year for my son's school; personally, I found it VERY complicated to round up all the data needed. Comparable to doing my taxes. They offered me a tiny loan and a tiny job for him waiting tables - no gift $. It soured me on the idea of doing all that work with no likelhood of getting any benefit.

Miami specifically advised to file to increase our chances at scholarships and we did. We are in no position to get any need based FA. However, we were very pleased with academic scholarships that exceeded our expectations. Is your son also at Miami (OH)? It could be different from school to school, especially considering difference in average income.

MiamiDAP, did your D receive the scholarship after filing FAFSA?

My son got academic scholarships at 3 private colleges, but they came with the acceptance letters (not enough to make up the difference between a public and a private, btw). We had to file the FAFSA to prove that he wasn't eligible for any other type of aid in order to claim the scholarships. We did send it to Miami, too, like their letter recommended.

FAFSA was required by Feb. 15, if I remember correctly. Scholaships came later, there were several letters, and it might be more $$ after you indicate to them that you are plannig to attend. We filed FAFSA because Miami said to file even if you know that you are not eligible for need based, and we are by far not eligible. We filed already for next year and plan to file every year that D. is at Miami. It sounds that FA office might use it for purpose that you describe to make sure there is no eligibility for need based before they give you academic. My husband said FASFA was not big deal, I am no judge, I did not do it.

Concurring with MiamiDAP - we are not eligible for financial aid, but are required to do the FAFSA for D's scholarships. Our financial situation is complicated, so it is definitely a pain. Our taxes are done in Germany (long story) so every year we have to beg to have them done early. I have my own business, so that's another tweak.

This year our income fell drastically (on paper, not in reality - the lower number was accurate both years, but was artificially inflated last year due to expenses paid by the company) - and even though we still don't qualify, Miami required a bunch of extra forms from us because of the big difference from last year. Seems silly, since none of D's awards are need-based, but we obey because we want to keep the scholarships!

One of the scholarships is for out of state students with certain SATs and class rank. This is an automatic scholarship; it would be a shame to have lost this because of not doing the paperwork.
