Does your school rank? If so, what's your rank? Top 10%?

I swim the 100 Butterfly (53.09), 200 Fly (2:01.2), 50 Free (22.58), and 100 free (49.34).

My school just imposed this bizarre ranking policy wherein ONLY the top 10% is ranked as per texas state law rules, but as I am NOT in the top 10%, I have no rank. Before they got rid of rank I was in the top 20%, but my grades went up a little bit after this.

Not being in the top 10% will hurt your chances.

My high school is one of the most competitive schools in Texas. It regularly sends kids to top schools. Last year 3 kids went to princeton, 2 to Yale, 1 to stanford, 1 to brown, a bajilllion to UVA, 5 to Rice, etc. Being in the top ten percent here is ridiculously hard, my school is in the top 100 USNWR High Schools.

Visited BU and Texas A&M. I'm only applying to Midd, A&M, Carleton and BU. I figure if I don't get into Midd, I'll go visit Carleton.

I am thinking
a) strong student
b) strong athlete

If you've been in regular contact with the coach and especially if he/she has encouraged you to apply early decision, I'd start thinking about looking at sales the winter coat you'll need next year.

Hey SJ, my S looked at Carleton too, also Macalaster and St Olaf. Did you rule them out?

Still applying to Carleton RD, but Midd is my first choice. Didn't consider the other two

My S actually liked St Olaf and Mac better. Mac is ultraliberal, in the cities, brand new pool and seemed great, but not many swimmers right now. St Olaf seemed "like they have more fun" to my S. Not as selective of course, but sometimes nice to be top dawg. He also is applying RD Carleton. If the ED thing doesn't work out.

I'm from Boston originally, and with those other schools, I can't imagine why you would want to go to BU. Think Tufts...

Actually rather disliked Tufts. Just seemed like an unhappy place. Not to mention their pool is worse than the one I currently swim in, which IS saying something. I just disliked the campus among other things. Besides the opportunities to go into banking from a smaller Lib arts school in the top 10 USNWR is better than hitting it out from Tufts. Sure, tufts has better brand name recognition to the general public, if not by much, but I just thought My odds would be better at Carleton. Not to mention, last year a Carleton rep came to my school and since I was the only one who had ever even heard of it, I got 1 on 1 with the guy for an hour and the school sounded awesome.
