We are going to be at the NESCAC swim championships at Middlebury in a few weeks and I'm wondering whether you Middlebury people could offer some advice on dining in town---both for dinners for H and me and also for quick good lunches with our D (perhaps a good pasta place---e.g., is Green Peppers good or would you recommend something else?). H and I are staying at the Swift House Inn---do you recommend its restaurant and/or are there others that you particularly like? Thank you.

The restaurant at the Swift House Inn is very good. I'd also suggest you check out the Waybury Inn (Waybury Inn, Middlebury VT Inn, Vermont Inn, Vermont Weddings, Vermont lodging), which is located around 15 minutes from campus in East Middlebury. The Waybury's exterior may look familiar to you--it was used in the opening credits of the Newhart Show. Robert Frost used to dine frequently at the back bar.

In town, Noonies is good for lunch, as is the Storm Cafe. Fire & Ice also is a decent restaurant.

The Student Center on campus has terrific food and low prices. Also, Mr Ups is casual, reasonable priced, and has a good salad bar. If you go to Mr Ups try their Mud Pie for dessert.

The other recommendations you've gotten are right on the mark.

If you want to go out of town, about 20 minutes drive north is The Black Sheep Bistro. You'll need a reservation. It's fabulous. Near the Black Sheep is the more casual Park Squeeze which has interesting wraps and soups.

The Swift House is a lovely place. You've made a good choice. Have fun.

Not right in town but worth the short drive for a great dinner is Tourterelle ( French Country Restaurant | Middlebury Inns | VT Organic Restaurant ). We had an absolutely delightful dinner there over fall family weekend and will definitely plan on going back. A real hub is American flatbread. It was packed family weekend, but again, really good. I will also say that 51 main was a great spot for meeting up and catching lunch, dinner, etc. Owned and run by the college, it is a great spot in the heart of the downtown area.

One of the great things about Vermont is that you'll find amazing food in places you wouldn't expect. The Addison county restaurant scene is definitely pretty developed for a rural area. I'd second the recommendations for The Swift House and The Black Sheep Bistro for dinner (especially Black Sheep--I'd go just for the fries...). American Flatbread is great for a relaxed atmosphere and local ingredients. For lunch, I'd personally say the best spot is the Storm Cafe, Noonies if you just want something to go.
