Just read an interesting AP article on Military.com. It stated that, as of October 21, 2004. applications were down 11% at USMA, 20% at USNA and 9% at USAF. Didn't give much explanation other than saying some of the post 9/11 enthusiasm that pushed up applications in the past two years has waned.

It pointed out the WP class of 2006 has had a 25% dropout rate. 904 of the original 1197 remain. This dropout rate compares to an average of about 20% for the previous 5 classes.

Probably has less to do with 9/11 than the evening news from Iraq.

Agreed. The class of 2006 had to decide before the beginning of classes this past September (beginning of junior year) whether to stay or go. Very negative publicity in August.

i think that part of the problem with class 2006 was that they entered in 2002, right after 9/11 and they did not truely look into what they were getting into and when they got there and they seen what the reality of it all was they just dropped out. And for the lower application rates thats just the better for us applicants... fewer for the admissions department to sift through, less of a choice, better of a chance for us who did apply to get in... i'm sure there are still a few thousand of us, but hey... the fewer the better...

At the beginning of 2/c year, every class has to decide whether they stay or whether they go...Class of '07 will do it this coming fall.

I don't know about West Point but I read an article in The Capital newspaper (12/18)that said that the number of USNA applicants this year is 10,485, down from 13,200 last year. I wouldn't be surprised if WP's numbers are somewhat similar.
