Congratulations to those who have heard already. I know that the waiting is tough on everyone....
One thing that will be missing from this forum this year is the "boot discussion". The class of 2013 will not be authorized to buy their boots before R-Day.

I've been getting a gajillion emails about that. haha Apparently, the boots are very easy to break in so they will only issue them on R-day.

What about the low quarters?

This boot thing is ridiculous, IMO. They aren't broken in that easily (I have a little experience in that lol)...it took me about a year and a half to break mine in to the point that i don't get any blisters now. Sure, they're probably a lot more comfortable when they're brand new than the old black leather boots were brand new, but they still need that breaking-in period.

As for low quarters, they can use some breaking-in as well, but you will walk many more miles in boots during Beast than you will in low quarters.

Ann - What's your info source on that? We just returned from candidate overnight visit Monday & Tuesday. During the admissions brief the boots were discussed. Nothing was said about the Class of 2013 not being able to buy their boots in advance....In fact, it was encouraged by the 1st Class Cadet who was giving the brief. So....we're getting some conflicting info here. Anbody know the "official" Admissions position on this?

If you need to break-in boots quickly, here's a way that works, seems odd and causes all sorts of contrary opinions. This can be done with any type of leather boot. Take both boots and soak them in a bucket of warm water until completely soaked through. Take them out, dry them with a towel, then put them on and wear them until they dry. If you don't have the luxury of time for a typical break-in, this method works as it molds the boot to your foot. It is essentially speeding up the normal process of heat/sweat from walking/hiking.

Latest official word regarding boots from USMA

<<<The Boot letter will not be sent this year.
All new cadets will be measured and fitted for boots and shoes on R Day. The new boots (tan suede) are nowhere near as difficult to break in as the old black boots.

They are still required to bring their own running shoes, well broken in, when they report for R Day.>>>

Speaking of running shoes: go to a GOOD running store; they will give you a great fitting and save some feet from huge pain later on!

I called my admissions officer and he said that while boots are being issued on R day, we can still get low quarters on our own and bring them to beast with us.

Funnily enough, he told me then and there that I had received an appointment, and that all the stuff was on the way.

One would do well to have a well broken in pair of boots. Beast was a few years ago, but as a Beast II PSG this summer, and seeing some of the new training. You need broken in boots. Your gonna be fighting cadre, fatigue, and injury as it is.

airborne101, what do you mean by "new training"? And are you suggesting that injury will be unusually prevalent? Why?

Beast is going to be more field oriented, so if one has boots that ripe up the feet then yes injury will be more prevalent. Plus more emphasis has been but on walking places rather than rider. So more rucking.
