Prior Grades

At the end of last year, I had a rough experience and wasn't up to scratch, and to make matters worse I had my math final the next day. I ended up getting a 78, after averaging a 90 all year. This year I'm currently averaging a 90 in IB Math SL, so my question is will that 78 come back to hurt me when I go to send in my grades?

You may want to explain the circumstances that led to the sudden dip in your math grade, to your Regional Commander in admissions, when you submit your transcript. However, you should be factual about it, take responsibility, and not make excuses.

Good luck!

slamdavis,

I believe USMA will discount the importance of individual math course grades if you do well on the math section of the SAT or ACT tests. Make sure to spend a considerable amount of time on preparation for the SAT/ACT tests. It's no fun, but it may be one of the most critical components of your USMA admissions package.

Yes, SAT/ACT results in conjunction with class rank (and transcript) are the most important components of the academic portion of the whole candidate score.
However, I believe a poor math grade will raise a few eyebrows and it is always better to explain it than just ignore it if there were extenuating circumstances. My 2c is to be proactive...

Aspen's advice about studying for the SATs/ACTs and doing the very best you can is great advice for all candidates.
