course schedule and school-related stuff

Where can we obtain our class schedules? Also, if a schedule has something like TR 2, does this mean Thursday at 2:00 pm and ending at 3:00 pm? Why aren't there any Tuesday classes? Is TR just Thursday or Thursday and Tuesday? Also, if we shows the COOP our class schedules, would we be able to obtain the textbooks? Thanks.

If you go to the Coop with the course numbers of courses you're taking, you can look through the book section and see which books are reserved for your classes. The book section is on the bottom floor of the Kendall Square Coop, and is organized by course number.

Incidentally, I wouldn't actually buy them there -- just write down the ISBNs and come home and buy them from the internet and/or upperclassmen in your dorm.

If a class just has a number after the days (ie MWF1 or TR3), that means it begins five minutes after the written hour (1:05 or 3:05) and ends five minutes before the next hour (1:55 or 3:55). Classes that last longer also start five minutes after the written start time and end five minutes before the written end time.

Books are just so expensive here. Do we really need books in the first week? Should I order them online?(take time for shipping but cheaper)

You won't need them the first week, and if you need them before they come in, you can always mooch off somebody else in your classes who bought their books already.

I would strongly advise buying books online/from upperclassmen, except in the case that the price difference between the Coop and Amazon Marketplace/half.com is negligible. And except in the case where you are independently wealthy.

Thank you. Is there any way we can find out who our professors are before the first day of class?

Re: finding one's professors, I should also say that course websites should be updated for this term, and they should list professor(s) for the class as well as which TA is teaching which recitation section.

Course websites can often be found at web.mit.edu/x.yz/www or on Stellar; if both fail, try googling from the MIT homepage.
