I know we'll get more info in May, but in what subjects are ASEs ususally offered for freshman? How do they work with credit, etc?
My specific problem is with physics - I've taken mechanics for two years, but my AP class does not cover the E/M portion, and MIT only gives credit for a 5 on both parts. Would I be able to use an ASE to test out of 8.01, or will I be looking at yet another semester of mechanics?
Yupp, you can use an ASE to test out of 8.01. During Orientation week, they offer ASE's in 18.01/02, 8.01/02, 5.111, and I believe 7.012. Sometimes ASE's have time conflicts so beware of that. Those are the basic ones, but you can contact a department to take their version of an ASE for a specific class.
There are eight advanced standing exams. In addition to the six vu_press_06 listed, you can also get credit for 18.03 and 18.06, though this is far less common.
You can get some information (although I don't know what's there at the moment and what won't be up until later) at the First Year 2011 site. If there's something you want to know that isn't there, you might be able to find it on the First Year 2010 site.
