Yep! That's all you need to do. Sometimes they won't have room, but a lot of times they will =). It might be wise to pick 1-3 classes you'd like that fit your schedule and show up to them and see.

You'll need to get an add form to have the professor sign (as well as your adviser) and then turn it in

True story: my husband never entered the HASS-D lottery at any point during his eight semesters at MIT. (Much to my anal-retentive consternation.)

There will be a list of HASS-Ds with open seats available sometime later this summer here. Generally, there will be more openings than are listed on that page, as people tend to sign up for the lottery if there's even a small chance they might want to take a HASS-D for the next semester. But that page is a good start.

*headdesk* BAD UPPERCLASSMEN INFLUENCES.

While entering the HASS-D lottery isn't required, it's nice to lottery into a class and KNOW that you can take it. It's to your benefit, as you're guaranteed a spot in the class you get but aren't required to take it =D.

Haha, Piper's right -- there's no reason not to enter the lottery, other than forgetfulness or laziness. Or if you genuinely don't care which HASS-Ds you take.

Not that I'm setting a terribly responsible example, but with the exception of first semester freshman year, I never lotteried into a HASS. Rarely are classes over enrolled, and even if space is tight you can usually get the prof to sign your registration form if you show up to the first couple of classes.
