Housing Assignments Questions

I was placed in Chocolate City for some reason and, well, I'm not black. Being caucasian I feel like I wouldn't really fit in here, and wanted to know what my chances were of being reassigned housing. Please note that the matter is not that I have a problem with it, because I am THE FURTHEST thing from a biggot; I think might even be that I enjoy diversity.

If I were to submit a housing reassignment application, what are the chances of being reassigned?

You don't need to apply -- there's a housing lottery at the end of orientation. So if you decide you don't want to stay in Chocolate City, you'll enter the lottery with your top picks, and you'll be reassigned.

Technically, somebody else has to choose to move out of a dorm for you to be able to move in, but most people are able to switch.

Statistics from last year are here: Lower Percentage of Freshmen Request Adjustment in Lottery - The Tech

Just a note - the table that came with that article shows no first-choice requests to move into or out of Chocolate City last year, and no one ended up moving in or out. I'm not sure what that means, but it won't be easy to switch out if no one wants to move in, I assume.

It's odd that you were put there... I was under the impression that Chocolate City wasn't just all-black by culture, but rather because that's what it's supposed to be. You might want to email the housing coordinator and ask about that.

Yeah, I was under the impression that Chocolate City was assigned freshmen in the same way as the other cultural houses...meaning that they choose them based on applications they received. I might be wrong on this, but if you didn't apply, I would get in touch with the housing office, because that sounds like an actual mistake to me.
