Do unrestricted electives have to be from your major, and if I pursue a double major, then how would that work?

Unrestricted electives can be whatever you want, in your major or out. You need 180 units beyond GIRs to graduate from MIT. It used to be that to double major, you'd need 270 units beyond GIRs, but that requirement doesn't exist for those entering anytime later than fall 2007.

Unrestricted electives are unrestricted. They can be whatever classes you want.

For a double, you'd complete the requirements for both majors, and classes from one major could be used as unrestricted elective credit for the other major. There's no limit on the amount of double-counting you can do.
