How exactly does this work? Do all the freshmen just log on to a website at the same time and sign up for classes, and as they fill they become unavailable for others? Is it difficult to get mostly earlier lecture and recitation times?

Freshman don't preregester for classes, which means the first time you need to confirm classes is during orientation, when you meet with your adviser. The exception to that is the HASS-D lottery, which you should have already entered (although if you didn't, don't worry. Just show up to the first lecture with an add form, and you should be fine).

Typically there is only one lecture time, so everyone will be in the same one. You get placed in a random recitation that fits your schedule, but if you have a problem with it (don't like the TA, inconvenient time, whatever), its very easy to switch (either officially, or just by showing up to the recitation you like better and handing in psets to the other one).

Also, besides HASS classes, there usually isn't an enrollment limit, so everyone who wants to take a class usually can.
