| Loft kits
Can anyone give me any info regarding lofting a bed? My D is in a small single and we're exploring the option of lofting her bed. Does MIT rent or sell loft kits for the existing bed in the room? The official policies seem to say they will review any plans for building one, but I was hoping someone had info about where they got a kit that was approved. Thanks!

MIT does not rent or sell loft kits as far as I'm aware - everyone I know that has a loft has built their own.

^Me too.
Depending on how high you want to loft it, cinderblocks are also an option. I know there were cinderblocks in most of the closets in MacGregor.

What dorm is your D in? That probably won't be D's permanent assignment.

She's in McCormick. Her letter said it's her assignment for the term.
Are we allowed to use cinderblocks? I know a lot of schools won't let you bring them.
Thanks for the replies so far!

Well, at least in MacGregor, they weren't allowed, but they were in all the hall closets.
"Allowed" is a pretty flexible word at MIT, particularly where the dorms are concerned.

I don't think all dorms allow you to build your own loft. (Simmons come to mind, but I might be wrong altogether.)
And the "approval" for your own homemade loft is basically that the housing manager doesn't actually witness it falling down during the 30 seconds he's in your room to do a safety inspection at the beginning of the year. Anything you actually buy in a store should be fine, I would just be cautious about the ceiling height. Someone on my floor bought a loft from Ikea last year, and it turned out to be a little taller than expected and didn't leave her much room up there.

Hahaha - Love it!
I think we're now just getting those 6" risers so she can have those plastic under-bed wheeled storage units. Hopefully they will fit. I really wish I had the dimensions of the dorm. I've only seen the total sq. feet.
I should probably start a new thread, but, where does one park to unload her stuff for McCormick?

I was hosted in a Baker double for CPW, and both residents had lofted beds.

You can park on the street right outside the dorm to unload stuff.

Re: under the bed storage, you can raise up the beds pretty high (at least if McCormick has the same furniture as EC you can). My bed was only partway up, and I was still able to fit 2 suitcases stacked on top of each other with no problems at all. It certainly isn't enough space for a couch or anything, but if you're just concerned about getting the bed ~1.5 feet off the ground, you shouldn't have an issue with Institute furniture.
