is there a place in Boston that provides free internet access? A coffee shop perhaps?

There are a bunch of chain coffee shops that offer free wifi -- Panera Bread is the first one that comes to mind, but I know there are others.

Starbuckses have WiFi, as do Barnes and Nobles.

Also, I think they're trying to make all of Harvard Square wireless in the possibly-distant future.

You'd also be surprised at the places that you can still get MIT internet - I've definitely booted up my laptop on random parts of the outskirts of campus and been able to get online. And if you're just looking for a quiet place to tool, a lot of smaller coffee shops and such have free wifi.
