does anyone have any comments about this school for musical theater?

I know one girl who just graduated from Muhlenberg. I'm not certain if her major was musical theatre or vocal performance, but I know she speaks very highly of the college and her experiences there, and is working over the summer in regional musical theater. She is a very talented singer and musician and I would expect that Muhlenberg is a good option for people who do not want to be in the city.

We visited last year and were very impressed with the program. While there is not a MT degree, all of the programs are very strong. It was one of my daughters favorites, but since she was accepted in the BFA program at IWU, she will not be attending. Everyone was helpful, friendly and inteleegent. The facilities were outstanding. We sing its praises to anyone who will listen.

Our D will be attending Muhlenberg this fall. She also did not want the city, wanted a college that had a campus(a "real" college experience - whatever that is!), and had strong acting and voice opportunities. She loved the campus the moment we toured. Everyone was so friendly and helpful. Our D auditioned and recieved an acting scholarship. She was accepted, after auditioning, into the choir and there are many a capella groups to join also. Our D's schedule for the fall includes ballet, jazz, an acting class, a math course, freshmen seminar(an english/writting course)which hopefully will be theater related,and individual voice lessons. As mentioned before, the facilities are beautiful and there are many performances to audition for throughout the year. We feel that our D will get a well rounded education with an emphasis on musical theater. Please let me know if I can share any other info.

I've heard that students at Muhlenberg have a good opportunity to do summer stock there.

We visited it about a month ago. They do NOT have a major in MT, but they do perform a musical every year, and have a very good dnace department,as well as theatre and music programs. We met the head of the theatre department and he was very nice. It's a pretty campus.

I am pretty sure they don't. It is a non audition BA. My S's friend is a freshman there and is loving it. She did not want the pressure of auditioning at BFA programs and is not sure if she wants to pursue this as a career, so applied to Muhlenburg and got scholarship money. She said there are only about 16 kids in her acting classes so she feels it is a good opportunity to get individualized attention. It is a small school-only about 2,500 students and a pretty campus so she likes it because it feels smaller and she says the kids are friendly. As an aside, I have a cousin who is a sophmore there, majoring in education. She is handicapped (cerebal palsy) and they have been so nice making sure she is comfortable=housing near her classes, someone helping her with the laundry so she doesn't have to go up and down to the basement where the washing machines are there, letting her move in and out on off days so she doesn't have the potential to get hurt when the flood of students do it. Her mother, my cousin, is so happy with the school because of that.

I would love to hear about your daughter's experiences at Muhlenberg. How did she come to select the program? Is she combining dance and music with the theatre BA to create an MT major? What do you see as the strengths and weaknesses of the program?

Can any current students/parents give me some more info on Marathon Theater? My tour guide at 'Berg yesterday mentioned it, and I am thinking about recreating it for my senior project. Any information you may have would be extremely helpful.

Our D has a very rigorous program at Muhlenberg. In her second semester, her courses are: Ballet, jazz/tap, stagecraft, Italian(language is a requirement and she chose Italian for Opera), private voice lessons, and freshman seminar(an english/writing intensive class) about the theater and involves acting in and going to see a lot of plays and performances. Oh, I forgot one theater class called "offensive". This is a production that they will do in April. It is teaching the students to act offensively. OUr D says it's too rude for us to go to see.(we are such niave parents that we wouldn't understand!!) The director is Jonathan Taylor Thomas' uncle and Jonathon supposedly has a role in the show.
Extra's include the college choir that has many rehersals and performances, an a capella group and a black box production of Evita in April.
Last night after a full day of classes, our D had acapella rehersal from 8 - 10pm and then went to the Evita rehersal from 10 - 12pm.
The overall program is very strong as far as quality of instruction. The professors are great and class size small. It is very difficult to put your own program together. In the BFA programs the classes are set and reserved for the MT students. At Muhlenberg anyone can take any theater courses. Our D is lucky to have an incredible advisor in the theater department who helped her to get into a class that was filled. Another disadvantage is that there are many, many theater majors and minors. There were 200 auditioning for the mainstage, blackbox, and third teir productions(guess it's just like the real world!) She was very surprised that she was chosen for a blackbox as a freshman.
