What admission factors do VCU, Boston SMED, and GWU weigh most heavily?

I intend to apply to those schools this upcoming fall and am wondering which factors weigh the most. Essays? Experience? ACT/SAT/SAT 2 scores? etc. I know that the interview stage is most important, but how about the stages before? For example, I plan to send only my ACT scores because my SAT scores are really low (1950). Will VCU accept an ACT even though they prefer ACT? Will it hinder my chances? Sorry for the long post!!

In general, it's academics first, then med experience, then essays in that order. 1950 probably won't get you far so if your ACT equivalent is a lot higher, submit that.

1950 might only get you into an easier in-state piblic university program and even that would be tough IMO. Definitely send the ACT.

Thanks for the help! My current ACT score is 29, but I am retaking it this Saturday(aiming for 33+). Hopefully, I will do well, and this will suffice. Do each of these schools have a particular focus?

Using concordance tables, a 33 is around a 2200 SAT which should be competitive unless the ACT is strongly not preferred for some reason. I don't think any of the progs you listed have a particular focus, but check their websites to see if they have a love of research, primary care, undeserved communities, etc (and subtly mention that in your essay and possible interview)

I've got a few questions about VCU's program.

1.) is a 2220 too low of an SAT score? (one sitting) should I retake in fall and hope for a 2300?

2.) if I submit my ACT score, will I need to also submit my SAT subject test scores?

3.) how much will not having research hurt me?

4.) do they ask for how many hours you've shadowed the doctors that you've shadowed? (this is a more general question)

Thanks in advance!

Also, does volunteering at a nursing home count as a medical experience?

Retake if you think you can get a 2300, don't blindly do it without more prep. If VCU requires subject tests, you will need to submit them. Research is good, but not needed, plenty of people get in without any. I was never asked for shadowing hours, only the time period, and the number of hours won't matter as long as you have a decent amount. Yes, nursing home volunteering counts (I hate nursing homes though, you could also try to volunteer at a hospital for a 2nd experience.)
