Competition and the Job Market after college

The past few months have been a roller coaster ride for most of us on CC. We have all worried about where our student will be accepted, whether the school will be a good fit and how we will pay for it. Perhaps worst of all is the angst of waiting! I believe our collective worries are made greater by the knowledge that when college is over, our musician children face an incredibly competitive job market. The classical music business in this country has suffered considerable challenges and orchestras and opera companies throughout the country are going out of business. The purpose of this post is to encourage everyone (parents and students) to make an investment in the future by supporting your local orchestra, opera company, or jazz ensemble. Go to a concert, buy a season subscription, give the gift of concert tickets and most of all, make a donation! Good Luck to all!

Better yet, support political candidates who will support the arts with government funding. Classical music needs some governmental support. The arts have always been better supported in Western Europe, and it shows.
