oh also - does anyone know about the program? How many people they usually accept? that kinda thing?

My kids were/are in the instrumental program but when I just asked my HS S how many kids are in the vocal program, his answer was "not a lot." It could be a boy thing or it could be real-you never know!

Double good wishes! How did the audition go? My S has his juries tomorrow.

If there is still time, you might also want to consider MSM precollege. The kids in the MSM program seemed to have a lot of fun and a less stressful experience. At least that is what my D reported back when the music kids compared their experiences.

im pretty sure the MSM deadline past. are there any other pre-college programs in the city that havent passed their deadline?
i dont think so...

juilliard called and told me i was number 7 out of the 6 people they are accepting.

Yes, the MSM deadline passed as well as the first round of auditions.

Sorry about Juilliard... I heard that they are currently downsizing their program from 360 students to 200, to make it more selective...

If MSM auditions have not completed, call even tho the deadline is past. My D was able to audition late. Things may have changed that was several years ago.

There are now mandatory call-back auditions for all classical musicians. The first round was last Saturday and call-backs are on June 2. The only possibility might be to call them and ask if you can send in a CD.

Thanks so much for all your help. Pianoman, I called and left a message and I'm going to call back in the morning. My chances are pretty slim - but I don't know MSM, maybe they will be nicer than Juilliard lol
Do you know how selective it is? This year, Juilliard was 6 out of 100+.

What is involved in the Juilliard pre-college program that you would not get from a good private teacher? Is it the cache of the name or is there more to the program? There are wonderful voice teachers available in the city. Music theory instruction is available from many piano teachers and high school AP classes. Good luck. Lorelei

My high school doesn't offer AP classes, and I need some ear training/music history training for college auditions. I have a good private teacher but it'd be nice to have a program that has it all compacted rather than taking seperate classes - I have little free time and many teachers don't teach late at night or on Sundays.
For me, it'd be easier to do a program.

MSM is fairly competitive. I know several really great musicians who have not been accepted to the program. Most people audition two or three times before they are accepted. I know for piano this year, there are 101 live auditions. I'm not sure how many recorded auditions were submitted (from other countries). The graduating class graduated 16-18 pianists, so I am guessing they accept that many.

I'm not sure how competitive voice is, in particular. I believe there are 12 voice in this years graduating class. They will be attending Rice, Eastman, Villanova, Temple, Bard, Vassar, MSM (5), Harvard.

I really would recommend going to some saturday precollege program if possible. It surrounds you with like-minded kids who are either very talented, very smart, or both.

MSM is much nicer... I broke my foot a few days before my MSM and Juilliard auditions. MSM let me send in a cd... Juilliard made me wobble in there in a cast and crutches.

Thanks so much for your help, pianoman. I have a friend, Matt Rosenthal, who attended the Bass program there and just graduated. He's going to Steinhardt and he always spoke very highly of the program - I just didn't realize you could go for voice.
